Cessna never glued foam to the carry through spar of the 177, only the 210. Vince N4NV
Vince, Thanks for the clarification. The bulletins for both mention removing the foam and adhesive, "If installed". I took this to mean they both could have it. My 78 M model (same as the accident plane) looks to have had foam at one time, but it has been removed at some point.

Curious to know what he paid the salvage yard for a serviceable carry-through. That part may get much more precious soon, rather similar to magnesium ruddervator skins for a Bo.
This sounds like an epic failure of the pre-buy inspection — presuming he had one done. That corrosion was probably years in the making, and would have been present for the last few annuals and the pre-purchase inspection. Almost certainly the previous owner passed it to your friend, perhaps knowingly, perhaps not, but still, a terrible shame.

Given the low value of early 210s, a corroded carry-through replacement would not be financially viable. Better off to find another plane, transfer over any goodies or low time engine and prop and keep the rest for spares. Sadly I’m inclined to agree with Michael. Has the rest of the aircraft been closely inspected? Note a lot of 210s had foam in the elevators to stiffen them. These invariably cause a lot of corrosion also.
