Zero utilities, small hospital (80) miles away, sheriff may or may not come depending on how busy they are. About as free and wild as things get in West Texas.
It is really interesting to see the behaviors when people stay a few days, especially if they hike the property or park and find some wildlife or encounter difficulty.
KJ Keith, where is it? I keep saying I’m going to roadtrip the wife and kids out to Big Bend. (I grew up in Midland so we visited frequently when I was a kid) I’ll never forget seeing the box city at Boquillas or buying quartz from a kid about my age that was half starved. Makes one very thankful. About 35 years ago my brother and I spent a week hiking and camping south of Sierra Blanca on a friend’s ranch. It was remote. Dark at night. So quiet at times that it was unsettling. That was a different time, the only other people were workers making the trek. No cartels, no mules. Different time.

Chip:
You are welcome anytime.
Not that much has changed. Boquillas is still the best little border crossing. Still silent all day and completely dark at night.
We are (20) minutes from the entrance to the National Park. Website has all the details. www.TenBitsRanch.com Please be sure to mention Beechtalk and your name if you call.

Keith, Is the Lajitas airport available to people not staying at the resort? I’d like to fly in for a quick trip and eat at the Starlight, maybe a night in Chisos Mountain lodges. Big Bend region is one of the the most visually stunning places in the world. A raft trip down Boquillas canyon is magical.

Please elaborate? Meaning they would starve to death if they had to slaughter their own food or the get tougher in those conditions?

Let’s just say it takes common sense to survive in a desert, especially if hiking, off roading or biking long distances. Add in no cell coverage, no utility service, some wild animals and very limited emergency services, closest hospital 80 miles away and some people really struggle.
A simple flat tire can leave you walking 40 miles or spending a night in the desert.
Some people figure it out, others literally melt down in front of your eyes. I have watched grown men who look like they spend 7 days a week in a gym cry over a rain storm and I have watched 90lb women pull out a poncho and a tow chain and handle it better then me.

How does a guy from Canton end up in the boondocks in south Texas. I see your F90 there in Akron every now and then. Beautiful plane.
Gary Thanks Gary. I started working with business partners in Texas in 2006. So I had been traveling there for years and planned to move there at some point. Long story short, a drunk friend at a business party in Virginia described a crazy place that he found on a recent trip. A year or so later, my business partners sold my business and I found myself with a non compete and no job. So I took a motorcycle ride across Texas and found this place for sale. KJ

Terlinqua wouldn’t be considered South Texas. The Big Bend is a vast region with its own unique sub subculture of people from all corners drawn to its vast beauty and solitude. Its definitely the most physically challenging region in the state to live and only for the self reliant. Back in the day there was a beer drinking goat named John Henry in Terlinqua, cans only. He would wrap his goat lips around the top of the can, lift his head and drain it. The goat alone made the 12 hour drive worth it. Lots of colorful characters from then till now. Terlinqua fly-In?

Yes, let them know you plan to stop at the resort bar (Thirsty Goat) or resort Restaurant (Candela) and they may charge a fee, but will not turn you away. They of course prefer you to stay at their resort. Airport ID is 89TE. They are building a really nice new runway. If you want to stay at our place, you can use our airport car. I move it around between the local airports for guests. KJ

I tracked a 3+ doing Champagne IL to Sonoma non stop. 1500NM in 4.5. That's about 6.5 in the PC12. I'll bet they had a lot of fun.
Don’t know if you have been to Penticton in Canada but it’s like Tahoe mixed with Sonoma wine country. Beautiful area.
