This new model from CubCrafters is opening up the backcountry experience for a larger sector of pilots without having to master the tailwheel. Take a look at a few of the pireps and videos on the new NXCub.

Flight Chops has a new, semi-watchable vid on youTube with a test flight. Fun airplanes. You (I) look at one of those and wonder, isn't that why I got involved in the first place?

I saw that video yesterday, plus a few others in the last week. Everyone who's flown it seems to think it's totally awesome in a way that a regular Carbon Cub is not. It looks goofy as hell, but I bet they sell a bunch of them.

It's probably great, but everyone I've seen fly it so far is likely a recipient of CubCrafters sponsorship money.

A pilot who can't master a tailwheel can't master the back country, either.

Let's be honest: few people flying these are "mastering" the back country. It's the airplane version of 4 wheeling. It's a fun hobby for them, but these planes are too expensive to be money makers for true bush operators.

Utter nonsense. Almost none of the professionals flying the backcountry are using tailwheel planes. The 206 does the lion's share of that work.

They won't be using the NXCub, either.

The skills and judgment needed to land an NXCub off airport in the backcountry isn't materially reduced by it having a nose wheel.

A 206 never seems to do this kind of work:

That's the target market for a NXCub.

Have you seen any of Larry Larabee's videos with his 182?

Here's his YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEy4on ... aNN5USqChQ

Backcountry flying is done well by nosewheel aircraft too.

Only if given much nicer conditions like longer and harder surfaces.

His 182 isn't landing where that Cub did, hydoroplanning onto the shore and stopping in 100 ft once reaching it.

That's just the nature of the two planes and the different roles they perform. The NXCub (or 182 or 206) simply won't be able to go where the XCub can go due to the nosewheel. If the NXCub is being sold claiming it can go anywhere the XCub can go, there will be bent airplanes.

So has Larry not “mastered” the backcountry because he flies a 182?
