Well...my younger brother has decided to get his ticket! Very exciting for me to have a future pilot buddy to talk airplanes with! And having another cool old airplane around to fly will be OK too!

He just purchased a 1963 Cessna P172D. Essentially a rebranded 175 for the last year of production to try and save the line from what had developed into a terrible reputation with the GO300.

This airplane is a great performer on paper and was a lot of bang for the buck. I'm going to be flying it quite a bit for the first few months and I'm curious if any others have had experience they could share.

My opinion of these engines is that they got a bad wrap for poor operating technique. Too much low RPM lugging from 0300 pilots transitioning up. This particular one has a constant speed prop. We will be bringing it home sometime in the next few weeks and I'm looking for operating tips to help make sure it's run correctly.

I'm also just excited to have another member of my immediate family becoming a pilot! Pictures of course...the interior is all original and even has the factory plastic on the rear seats. Only 2000hr TT.

Congrats to your brother.

I have no experience with the GO-300, but my recollection was that it needed to be treated like an old radial or T-Bone with geared engines. No throttle jockey-ing and make sure the engine is driving the prop, and don't let the prop drive the engine.

I'm actually not sure what the diameter is. I will have to look it up. Pretty cool looking prop design though.

I'm kind of excited to put some hours on it. It's no Bonanza but will be fun to fly I'm sure. I've read the same. Run it hard and it be happy.

3rd from the last of Cessnas production. Neat to be just a little different than the average 172.

Well 5 months later and it's finally home! Flew great! Good performer. The GO300 was silky smooth...while my Bonanza continues to be under the knife for an extensive build I'm going to be putting a lot of hours on this bird....if I have any spare time away from work.

Pictured is excited brother ready to start his training and the Missouri river.

He may have bought the wrong brand of airplane, but at least he is wearing an proper sweatshirt (Go Jayhawks!)

Looks fun. My dad has one that needs a lot of love to get back in the air. His project plane.

Go figure...South Dakotans as Jayhawk fans. None of us even went to school at KU!? Big fans none the less. We will be down this year for at least one game I'm sure.

Project planes are as much fun as flying planes I always say....not quite but almost! There's something special about giving them a heartbeat again. Good luck to your Dad with his project!

Thanks Bob! He hasn't flown much so this is really a dive in head first deal for him. I believe my enthusiasm for aviation finally wore him down! I'm hoping he really enjoys it. Would be nice to have another pilot in the family.

All original interior. Even the sheepskin is covering seats that look pristine. Too bad the 60s era paint didn't stick just a little better. Has some flaking and mismatched white in places. Overall very solid airplane.

Adam, I would just get it in good flying condition and fly the hell out of it.. looks good to me. Stay safe! Touch up would be easy.
