Houston we have a problem. Put an Alaskan bush tail wheel on. Ugh.

I ate up two tail wheels pretty fast solving tw shimmy. It felt horrible. It all started when I switched to some Alaska stinger with a better angle. Finally the mechanic got it working correctly and it has been trouble free since. I just monitor the psi between 50-60 psi.

My plane has the hartzell 80" top prop. What would I gain from installing a 86" on it? Or is 86" more focused for the seaplanes?

Rgs,
Patrick.

Generally speaking, the longer props are better for takeoff and climb, at the expense of cruise speed. How much is the subject of much debate, though virtually every workhorse 185 and 206 I’ve seen in Alaska and Idaho has an 86” or 88” Mac 401. That says a lot.

I also have an 80” Top Prop. My 86” Hartzell Voyager ships on the 18th. I’ll report once it’s installed.

Initial reports are that the Voyager pulls as hard or harder than an 86” Mac 401 and is 3-4 kts faster. Since the 80” Top Prop is faster than an 86” 401, I’ll be happy if I keep my current speed with the benefit of the better takeoff performance.

We’ll see.

Chris,
Do you have the IO520 in your 185? Felt like my 185 was on an express elevator with its prop engine combo. Stu would have to share the size/type now. Can't imagine getting even more performance.

Pulled the cowl to do an oil change. Heater shroud is damaged.

“Jet landings” on Cessna spring gear!!!
Hahaha sorry Mark just had too.

This isn’t unusual and also not easy to see. Requires “smoking” sometimes to find the cracks. Had this on one side of 985 at annual. Couldn’t “see” anything.

Jet landings. I would qualify. Every landing is your first.

The good news is my jet landings have gotten a lot better ever since I got the wagon.

You can land soft or you can land short, but you can't do both at the same time. . . .
