Mu2’s are pretty much the box that you buy used garrets in. Midtime Stock (-6 or -1) engines can be had reasonably

I second what Mike says about the MU2. I owned a 421 before the MU2 and it was constantly in the shop. Knock on wood, my Solitaire has been incredible. You really can't fly the 421 much above FL220 and the MU2 can easily fly anywhere in the 20s. You get very spoiled flying 300kts.

On Dave's question, You can find great MU2s for 300k. A few weeks ago, I was considering a Citation and considered selling mine for very close to that amount. I've seen incredible F models with low time engines and Garmin avionics for 300k. An MU2 like that will fly for years with minimal maintenance.

OP: Which tail dragger under $15K is best?

Poster 6: If you are going with an MU-2, there are plenty of Citations on the market for the same money. You buy it, fly it for 9000 hours and then you can part it out. You’ll make at least $5mil on that kind of deal.

Poster 6: Anyone want to buy my Citation? It’s great.

Adam, from casusl observation, it certainly seems like the well maintained desirable models of Turbo Commanders are 2x the cost of an MU2

Except fit in a small hangar, ride turbulence well, and stay out of the maintenance shop.

I very seriously considered buying a turbine Commander, but they do have a reputation for being maintenance hogs, something Adam can attest to personally.

I don't think it's that much, but they're a tad more, for sure. The bottom of the barrel MU-2's you see are often early -1 models that should be more readily compared to 681 models (which never come on market), so it's hard to form a basis. Few -10 engined MU2's (which is what you want, ideally) for less than $500-600K, which is pretty close to TC pricing w. same engine.

I like MU-2's, I considered one myself many times. I wouldn't discourage anyone from it. It just feels like nobody mentions the other options in that bracket; TC's, Merlins and B100's. Especially the B100 on here gets the omertà. It's like the red headed step child that was convicted of stealing the family silver. The unmentionable. ;)

I wouldn’t kick a TC out of bed but then again it would only fit in one hangar at my home airport and it’s not mine.

I haven’t seen many functional 300k turbo commanders...

I understand... but I’d still check w&b

421 was almost impossible to put any two potty-trained humans on the 7th8th seats
