I got to thinking what it might cost to refurb this 210. I will certainly defer to the experts, but my guess...

All new interior and glass, with deep scotchbrite to bare metal and chromate, from a top shop like AirMod, I’d guess $100K.

All modern panel, all new wiring and breakers, antennas. Like $140K.

New engine, and new everything FWF, engine mount too, like $160K.

Full new paint with replacing that which needs, like $25K.

Other stuff like gear, cables, rigging, lights,...like $40K.

Probably there will be something serious structural that needs some creative expertise to make work. Which can happen at a weight penalty.

So, I’d guess this 210 could be a nice machine for like $500K and like two years of effort. (Yes, I know AOPA does their refurbs in a year, but that is hard even for them, and this 210 is way far gone.)

For 500K on the used market you can buy a nice fully working 210 and gas and maintenance for years.

But 500K for a good-as-new 210 is not totally unreasonable. Just on the edge of it. I might add in another 100K for air conditioning, TKS, oxygen.

If the surprises were another 100K I would not be surprised.

What do folks think? Are these numbers wildly high? Or would it actually cost even more?

-Bill

Bill, A while back I read a Story about a Fellow featured in AOPA, that Does Exactly This with A-36 Bonanzas :bugeye: :D
Bring him an Airframe, or Have him get it for You........Price 400-450K :D Brand New Bonanza for Less than 1/2 Price from Textron

If you got an airframe for free,

What would it cost to strip to metal and build anew? Every switch and wire replaced.

Van’s Aircraft will ship you an RV-10 ‘quick build’ kit for less than $65k, which is approximately the same as a stripped factory airplane (but with no risk of corrosion, because it’s brand new)

Figure $60k for a brand new firewall-forward package and $65k for all new avionics (Experimental avionics are WAY cheaper than certificated avionics)

So $190k for all the major subassemblies, no risk of big expensive surprises, no need to catch up on 20 years worth of ADs and service bulletins, and you get a repairman’s certificate.

I fly a certificated airplane, but I acknowledge the appeal of a homebuilt. Ultimately one would have to ask whether the restoration risks and expenses and commitment are approximately equal to those of building an experimental.

My $0.02

I suspect there would be some labor efficiency in

1) strip the plane to bare airframe
2) start building

But yeah not hard to find your way WELL past the reasonable cost of an airworthy airplane

It really is gut-wrenching, the fleet's not getting bigger and I've got a soft spot for the 210.

The 210 fleet is diminishing much more quickly than most! The drug smugglers are eating these up at a rate of 30-50 a year in Mexico, Central and South America.

It used to be that they bought the junk. In the past 15 to 20 years they have started buying a lot of very nice planes.

Chip was warning us about that and some people were trying to tell him that he was incorrect and making an ass of themselves. The cartels love the 206/210 and even the 300 and 400 series C brands. Stolen MU2s and KingAirs are a bit too visibile but they were able to grab ahold of some heavy iron and land it on a road a few weeks ago.

Sinful to see good aircraft rot....88k? It would cost that much to eradicate the black mold. They must smoke some outrageous $heet down in MS...

Advice...Get it out of that shelter ASAP before prime tornado season ends :cross:

I’ve been with this airplane since I was a pup. Through the various partnerships I saw this airplane deteriorate over the years until I became sole owner with the determination that it was going to come back to my standards. (Working for a military contractor in the tooling and parts business, I knew what was expected in a quality built fighter jet.)
This airplane was a project that was completed last year with a new engine installation. My wife and I totally rebuilt the airplane from stem to stern including interior. Basically the only thing for the next owner will be paint and new windows. The guys over on CPS have followed my progress over the years and have been a huge resource helping me get it right.
Sorry for the duplicates but here is where we’ve been:
