Last week a bunch of Dynon boxes came and I am starting to install them in my Onex experimental. I thought I would share the fun. The panel is pretty much as it will be except I have to install headphone jacks, with PTT on the stick. There is not much room in the Onex, so I have to find spots for the comm box, the adhars, engine box and backup battery. I am holding off one the transponder until after I have the 40 hours flown off but that will most likely go under the seat ( it is a remote box controlled through the screen). I wrapped the cowl in vinyl digital camo and also wrapped a little fiberglas fairing with the camo, shown in one of the photos. After it is flying a while I will finish the wrap on the rest of the airplane.

OMG I turned it on today after installing over the last couple of months and it lit up! Nothing melted. I have to do more setup but all the components seem to be talking to eachother nicely. I am counting the days until I can finally become a child of the magenta line!

Looks good. I have become somewhat of a Rotax mechanic the last three years myself .
Move that front tire to the rear

Beautiful. I showed it to my steam guaged Bo and it tipped its headliner.

It’s been a long time, but I still remember the day I picked up the pile of avionics I installed in my RV4 panel.

I was working on my instrument rating at the time, and I saw those boxes as a portal to all the far-off places I envisioned I would go. I kept the faith, and eventually that RV fulfilled its promise as a personal time machine.

I wish I could have logged the hours I spent sitting in the unfinished cockpit twisting knobs and learning the switchology. It certainly has benefitted me: On a 430W flight plan, I can twist in most letters and numbers from muscle memory.

I hope your projects brings you as much joy and satisfaction!

M

This is my sixth airplane and the first with a glass panel. Because the Onex panel is so small, it would be very hard to get everything on the panel without some glass. Plus the cost of the six pack and engine instruments is about a wash with the cost of the Dynon, plus you get the moving map and synthetic vision and all the other functionality. So you pretty much have to go glass these days, even in a homebuilt.

After I fired the Dynon up, everything worked except the com radio. I could not receive or transmit on the com radio. I did all the wiring myself, except for the com radio harness, which I got from Aircraft Spruce for $35, which is a pretty good deal. Except that after about two days of troubleshooting and head scratching I figured out that the headphone jacks on the Spruce harness were wired up backwards. I don't know anything about electronics or avionics, so I felt like I was in pretty deep water there for a while.
