Hello BT,

I’ve been lurking for a while and learning from the vast knowledge base that we call a forum. While I lust after various beech products the thought occurred to me, what is at the other end of the spectrum?

I’ve seen older threads, usually on the topic of cheap taildraggers; does any of that hold in 2019? Does the market still support anything serviceable at this price point?

I'd say its pretty much the same. You can still find plenty of run of the mill early Cherokee 140's, Cessna 120/140/150's, Luscombe, Champ, Taylorcraft, Ercoupe, Stinson 108, Citabria 7ECA, Grumman AA's, Beech Musketeer, Flybaby, Pietnepol, Starduster, Acrosport, Skybolt etc.

You can also find the occasional flying project of an early Bonanza, or Sundowner if you're patient.

You can still ride semi-proud in your T-Tailed, Beechcraft Model 77 Skipper for $20K! They're kind of a fun little toy. 'Jetson' mobile... or maybe, 'Veggietales' with wings ~ ME

If you need a little inspiration for cheap planes, check out this guy’s project. I listened to an interview with him and he said it took him about $3,000 all-in to get this back flying. He did have a A&P friend help out, so there were certainly cost savings there, but the story is cool nonetheless.

I have a whopping 10-ish hours of Skipper time from 30 years ago; fun flying little airplane! But, slow; I recall cruise speed was at top of the white flap speed arc...

Bought my 69 C-150 last August for $15k with a new top and 1500 SMOH. Not the prettiest plane on the ramp but I got my ticket in it and it served it's purpose. BTW, I average between 4-5 gph.

I'm on the Indy Air Sales mailer and they just listed a C175 for $17,950, IFR and fresh annual. Doesn't look bad in the picture.

Original GO-300 engine?

Can you get those overhauled these days?

175s make ideal 180HP conversion platforms since they are cheap and have larger fuel tanks (54 gallons?).

There used to be a 215 Franklin conversion. That was my first airplane in 1968.

I'm sure it is still the geared engine. I looked into these old C175's once, and flew one. I really liked the geared engine. Only geared engine plane I have flown. It was smooth as silk.

When I researched future overhauls/engine conversions, I found there are a bunch of used GO-300's out there for sale from people that have converted their C175's to Lycoming's. There is no demand for those engines so they are very inexpensive to buy. My plan at the time was to acquire enough serviceable GO-300 parts to do a future overhaul or just buy an as removed GO-300 engine and keep on flying. But then I discovered Bonanza's...

I need to not read this thread.
I am reminded of a few halfway decent Cessna 310s I've seen not far from that limit..

My first plane was a ‘58 Skylark. Great airplane for the money. Flew it all over the country including Oshkosh, where I camped under the wing. She wasn’t much to look at, but we had some good times on the cheap.

Taildraggers definitely intrigue me, although with zero tailwheel time I'm not sure how willing insurance would be to play along (I haven't checked yet).

That 108 looks interesting, albeit the opposite side of the country from me. Perusing Barnstormers found a 120 a bit closer but I have no idea how they compare.

Can't help thinking about the other things it will buy you in aviation.
gtn 750
exhaust for a twin cessna
one charter flight in a Citation

aviation is one weird duck.
