My 310R with 7200 hrs has cracking at both gear web assemblies. I have been told by reliable sources that is not uncommon, especially with that much time and with the R being heavier than the earlier models.
The quote was for 2 kits SK414-8E and 68 hrs./side. Fortunately I was sitting down. A friend had a 310 years ago and thought that only one kit was needed as it included the parts for both sides. Also, 136 hrs. seems like a lot.
Has anyone had any recent experience with this?
Thanks

I've seen people speak recently of side brace kit installs going between 20-30k.

Have you gotten a quote from TAS and from Biggs? Those would be the 2 that I would think really know the true cost of this particular install.

I absolutely not have just anyone do this install.

You only need 1 kit per airframe, as it contains the "common" parts for both the RH and LH wing ribs. If the shop quoted you 2 then I would question their prior experience in performing the repair. Here is the parts list from the kit. Take note it includes both the LH and RH doublers (5292004-7 & 5292004-8) along with quantity 2 of the symmetrical fillers (5292004-3 & 5292004-4).

What about the out-of-production, hard to find parts, not included in the kit, applicalable to your model? Are these mentioned on your estimate? It takes more then just SK414-8E to repair the cracks.

Serious question: Is this worth the effort? Maybe it's better to consider parting it out and finding a replacement airplane. These are not rare or unique airplanes and this repair is going to add no value to the bird so perhaps it is best to step back and analyze the economics of this situation.

I don’t think parting out is an option. I don’t know the condition or how well your airplane is equipped, but 310R is a nice airplane. Give Tony Saxton a call. He’s done a number of these. I believe this mod does make this airplane more attractive on the used market when it comes time to sell, VW.

The side brace kit does add value to the airframe. Either way you are going to pay. Sell it “as is” and suffer the new buyer deducting the brace kit and install from the asking price. Add the kit and fly on. The R is a valuable and fabulous airframe.

Call Mike Busch! He will give you some advise. He owns a R model as well.

An update:
Yes, only 1 kit is needed plus a few extra parts (older airplanes require more parts). I have corresponded with Tony and others and decided to go with the original quote. I am comfortable with their explanations and experience. I will posts the end results in a month or so.
And no, parting it out is not even a consideration. It is a beautiful airplane with all new avionics, autopilot, parts, interior and paint. My position is coming around to this: These are antique airplanes that should be appreciated and maintained. If we don't do it, who will? Like a nice piece of property, maintain it, improve on it and most importantly don't screw it up. In the end, pass it on while losing as little money as possible.
Thanks for all of the input.

Hopefully you dont have a Turbo310R. The exhaust AD and the canted bulkhead corrosion repair usually sneaks up on unsuspecting owners. Those are $$$$$.

The guy that told you he wants you to part it out isn’t dumb!
‘Part it out! Hey do you want to sell it for $25K??’ Hahahahahah! :woot:

Previous owner did it. I’ll see if there is a receipt in there.

Wow.

These planes-all of them-are showing their age and creating bills that are staggering and demoralizing. Best of luck.

I would contact Steve Fortner at FORTNER AIRPRO. Steve has started his own shop after being chief mechanic at a leading twin Cessna shop in ohio for over twenty years. He has installed many side brace kits and can give you an accurate cost. He can be reached at 1-567-239-6664. Steve has personally looked after our 310 R since we purchased it in 2008. You will not find a better or more caring person to take care of your plane than Steve
