In the 180/185 if you’re look8ng for speed, Snyder would tell you one secret is a larger and heavier tail wheel. It is out of the airflow in cruise and being heavier and further aft helps CG. Shhh don’t tell everyone. :coffee:

You’re right. I think that guy who sold me the 185 kept a few knots for himself.

Stuart,

That sounds about right, around 12 GPH is about what I figured when flying my dad's 180 and on wheels and it went about that fast; on Edo 2870's it was more like 110kts. Considering the 180/185 are the same airframe I would expect a 520 or 550 pulled back to 180 fuel flows would achieve 180 speeds as well.

Only thing you're doing wrong is being honest....

One of the first things I discovered was all my airplanes were heavier, slower, burned more fuel, and worth less than everyone else's.

You can say anything you want in the bar or on BT as long as you’re honest when you flight plan.

I got the same speed on my last 185 that had 8.50's, Horton kit, and a IO520. My next 185 isn't running yet, it has the sportsman kit.

I agree. After 25 years of flying, I now have a fast plane that doesnt guzzle gas and has virtually no squawks out of the ordinary.

Yeah, I think Im gonna sell it and buy a boat.
