Hi John, the 64 I & the 65 J are virtually identical.
According to Larry Ball in "The Marvelous 310," improvements in the "I" 1964 model (over the "H" 1963 model) included:
- elevator bobweight
- better heater
- removable lower cowl panels
- new nacelle baggage lockers - THIS WAS A BIG DEAL FOR ME
- cowl flaps replaced by exhaust augmenter tubes
- flap extension reduced from 40 to 35 degrees for better go-around handling
- full 6-seat cabin
Then, additional improvements in the "J" 1965 model included:
- redesigned engine cowlings
- landing lights moved from under the wing to the tip tank fairing
- new O2 system with individual outlets
- Some UN-improvements from 1964 to 1965:
- the max speed dropped from 244 in the I to 238 mph in the J
- the service ceiling dropped from 23,600 in the I to 20,300 in the J
Both models:
- used IO-470-U engines
- have 5100 lbs gross weights
