One of my best friends just called me having shut his Mustang motor down shaking like crazy just after a HOT inspection. I speculated a #3 bearing failure and PW speculates a starter-generator failure. Speculate away.

Quote: PW speculates a starter-generator failure. Had a vibration in a Citation long ago. When we diverted and landed there was bronze looking debris under the starter gen. (not the same engine... but symptom)

He did cycle the gen and it was still making power and cycling did not change the vibration. The motor has about 1800 hours on it and literally just had an on wing HOT. He's on every program so he is not concerned about the money. PW is coming out Monday to replace the starter-gen.

Starter gen vibration is a known issue. Turning gen off does not uncouple gen from engine. Vibrations can damage gear in accessory pad on engine. Only way to stop damage in flight is to shutdown engine. Your friend should join CJP where this problem has been discussed for over 2 years. Textron now has a program to replace starter/gens with more than 900 hours with Mod D gens. Attachment: 1628F612-7126-4136-A709-442D7B4DD109.png Attachment: 4EB78315-EB4C-43E5-9BDF-3310EB2E3EA4.png

He's a member of CJP and pretty up on these things. Fresh hot from Pratt; he's on pro-parts and motor plan. This is probably just a freak event but I'll report back when they show up Monday with the techs.

Programs replaced both starter gens, $800 in labor. Back in business. Cessna and Pratt impressed me today.

The starter/gens is a known issue for which Textron/Pratt acknowledge the problem and have a program for replacement. Stories of difficulty with Pratt are around for one off problems. I have heard none of those type of stories for Williams engine programs.

My friend loves his Mustang and flies it about 300 hours a year. The programs all in are about $500/hour but literally cover everything other than inspections and some labor costs. He thinks they are a good value and we squabble often about whether or not I agree. But, it works for him and that's all that matters. For example, he mentioned "hey what about the other starter gen" and they said, no problem and replaced it also. Impressive.
