Geared engine and training wheels on 175. My first plane 50 odd years ago.

Might be some cooling issues. I knew another conversion that did.

Some difficulty filling the gas tanks all the way. Second hand info from a guy I trust. They were designed to fill while level, not with the tail on the ground.

Better range than a 170. Bigger tanks.

Haven’t heard about any tail wheel troubles, but that fuselage wasn’t designed for dragging. Worth a very critical look.

Would you ever want to put it on floats? How would that work? Make sure there’s a compatible STC. The gear aren’t where they need to be for 175 eligible floats, and it’s not a 170, so that STC is no good. Where does that leave you?

Doesn’t have that beautiful curvaceous 170 tail, but does have a very macho looking tail to make it look like a Skywagon.

Worth considering.

Isn't that fuselage just about identical to the 170?

Not a taildragger conversion but a nice discussion on 175.

The Cessna 175 was only built from 1958 through 1962. The C170/175/180/185 all have the same body - even from earliest C170s through the latest model 185. The difference is in the tail/vertical stabilizer. The 175 has the same tail as the straight tail C172s. The C170 tail is rounded. The C185 vertical stabilizer is larger and stronger. I flew a C175 Bolen tailwheel conversion for the first time this weekend. It had an O-360 Lycoming engine. This is a common mod for the C175. I felt it landed very similar to my 180 other than it had the characteristics of the Bolen conversion once the tailwheel touched the ground. I have time in Bolen converted C172s. The performance of the 175 was similar to a C172 with a 180HP motor. Seemed like it cruised around 110-115 knots. Great climb and short field characteristics.

I had a ‘58 175 as my first airplane. Flew it from Memphis all over, including Oshkosh, Denver, etc. I loved it. It wasn’t much to look at, as the paint was all faded and the interior was a hodgepodge from various planes. It had the G-O-300 engine, which did not give us any problems. The handlebar controlled flaps were really nice as well. I think the geared engine has scared a lot of buyers away, driving the price down. This can make it a good value, depending on the specific plane

Joe,
You aren't that far away. Come visit. We've almost always have at least one each of the Cessna tail wheel models in the shop. I don't have a 175 at the moment, which is unusual.
It's easy to compare the differences and changes over the years when you can just take a few steps and have time to study.
I do have a 170B with the Continental IO-360 (these are not for sale......mostly plane porn)

I sold my 185 a while back when i got the barron, still have the j-3 but got the itch for another taildragger, 180-185 prices have gone crazy, thought this might be a cheaper version of the 180, i would go with bigger tires

There is a C-175 for sale at Lewis Landing in New York. If anyone is interested, you can call Dick Deming - I think he is VERY Flexible on price. I recently bought a 57 172 from him.

rdeming@optimum.net

If you want his cell number, test me at 631 374 9652
