I think you are correct. It is also painfully slow if I remember correctly.

“Rocket ship” for mountain airports is one that flies great with one engine out. A 146 on three engines was a rocket ship compared to a dc9 on one - hence it’s use for hot/high/stol

I think we were the first US operator of the 146 at PSA. At that time your choice for shorter, thinner routes were small turboprops or larger mainline jets. So the 146 was ahead of its time for the smaller regional jet. Concept was good, execution not so much.

The engines were geared turbine that I think were designed originally for tanks. They were very good at making metal. Our 146 pilots were excellent with engine out procedures as engine failures were very common. And yes they flew very well on three.

In fact in the contract with BAE was a clause for aircraft down time. Believe the aircraft had to have a 85% reliability average.
With all the engine failures this was not being achieved. So BAE had to pay for two extra aircraft and crews to sit alert to replace aircraft that had engine failures.

Eventual got most of the engine issues under control but was never considered a reliable engine. Most thought that if BAE had hung two turbofans on the aircraft might have had a a winner. Other than the engines, airframe was robust and pretty comfortable inside compared with turboprops of the day.

Interesting to see it being used for fire fighting. Guessing aircraft are fairly inexpensive and solid airframe.

My hangar neighbors had a -146 as a personal aircraft for their family to run down from Fort Worth to Austin for UT games. The interior looked very comfortable. They replaced it two or three years ago with a 737. They had a BAC-111 before the -146.

I think they put less than 150 hours/year on the 737.

Not anymore. DTW just switched over to all RNAV Arrivals. All of the old arrivals either have been, or shortly will be, retired.

Just flew with a guy who flew the AVRO at Mesaba. The AVRO was the much improved version of the 146, and he quite liked it.

Best,
Rich

As Craig stated, PSA flew these up and down the California coast when I was starting out with frequent business travel, early 80s as I recall. As a passenger, I loved them, and I never experienced a bad landing in one--presumably due to the trailing link gear. I was sorry to see them go. Of course, I wouldn't have been aware of reliability or climb issues.

Didn’t Air Wisconsin fly them as well as Mesaba?

Aircraft: On the hunt...
There was a company awhile back in the UK converting Avro RJ's into an RV is sorts with palatial interiors and a very large cargo door on the left rear. The door opened downward transforming into a platform for a Sheik of one flavor of another to sit on while his hawks were released for hunting.......
You can't make this stuff up.

There’s a family out of Fort Worth that flys one. They bought it to go in and out of Aspen. We used to run into their crew a lot.

They sold it. One of my ex coworkers from Comair flew it for them (oil company). They upgraded to a VIP 737.

I used to fly the Avro version a fair bit as a passenger in the early 2000s. London City was a favourite. Until this happened. Trailing link gear or not, this was a tad much for that airframe.
