so lately I've been banging my head against the wall looking for something FAST.

I'm planning on keeping the 340, as it is a great family traveler and gives me an honest 200KTAS.

But I can't help thinking I need a weekend speedster. looked at the Legend, turbine legend (have found 2 for sale), or Lancair Legacy (I'm not interested in a IV). I think an RV-8 is too slow, although it looks fun.

what do you guys think about the race modified Super Legacy, with a TSIO 550? anybody ever flown one? built one? any experience with the groups that are building them to race (i've seen2 race planes for sale)? what about a race plane being over-g'd?

seems like Michael Tarver went through this equation a few years ago...

Since you mentioned the Lancair Legacy, don’t forget its counterpart, the Glasair III. Another zoomin’ plane! 215kts and fully aerobatic.

it was my favorite aerodynamic shape- but they are few and far between now- company long since defunct.

The highest thrills/risk of death airplane (I think that's exactly what you described you wanted) and also the most fun would be the Harmon Rocket. Not cheap but an Extra 300 would be a safe thrills airplane too.

The Super Legacy looks a lot of fun but flying behind a Super Stressed out motor (definitely more high strung than a stock TSIO-550) with a high wing loading is fairly high on the thrill/death spectrum IMO.

I'll throw out the L-39 in the mix. Pretty darn safe, fairly cheap and lots of fun.

Citabria with big ol 160 hp o-320 flying 12 feet (I know, thats like 134" too high for a crop duster but I'ma kinda chicken) over a big corn field at 115 mph or over the winding Pee Dee river does if for me.

I had an SX 300...248 knots...Lycoming. Retract. Excellent group to fly with if you are into going with a group.

Wish I had kept it.

That's the plane I was thinking about, but couldn't remember the name of. Looks sexy fast sitting still

I don't think I could feed an L39, and honestly, it's not sexy enough- but I'll grant you, they do look fun.

you still flying the IV? any knowledge of the turbine-powered Legacy? (I heard innovative composites is working on one with a PT6-20), but it requires substantial reworking of the carbon wing/tail.

There's a Lancair 235/320 for sale for only $50K right here on Beechtalk.

I don't know. The Zébulon is a great training platform, fun and easy to fly and do aerobatics with, but exciting...Meh. Maybe because we were all much more attracted by the alternative, the Tucano. Also, Cognac was a horrible place.

Extra 330LT. Acro like an LX, but substantially faster.

Nothing beats the roar of two GE F404 afterburning engines. You never get back the feeling of military aircraft and you always miss the smell of Jet-A/JP-4.

That little Lancair caught my eye and the price is less than what most of our wives have parked in the driveway. My beater has 129k miles on it and I argued to keep it for another 129k miles to buy that Lancair.

I would have bargained with SWMBO to put that (then $55k, now $50k) Lancair in my stable.
...until I found out IT WAS TOO FAST for Basic Med.
Yes, that's right, that gorgeous little yellow beauty is too fast for Basic Med!
