Took my first flight with the sportsman/ vg combo. Ran it through some basic maneuvers. My speeds match Dave’s pretty closely. 6000 feet altitude. 30 gals, 2 people and 1 Labrador. 45f Stall speed 38 mph ish. The scale gets a little narrow down there, it was definitely below 40 mph indicated. Slow flight turns worked as usual. No surprises. Good aileron response Take offs were shorter. No odd quirks I’ll go get more envelope data today I got the mod primarily to improve the comfort margin on a couple strips of which we are particularly fond. I think we’ll be good there. So far, flying two approaches, it appears I’ll be able to reduce the approach speed 5-10 mph.......that works out to be about 2 grand per mph.

That's a significant reduction in the stall speed. I'm getting about 49mph at roughly the same weight. That'll make a difference of 200 feet on takeoff and landing, which is huge in some situations. Or just "more comfortable" in many more.

Dave, the forward trim thing might work because by bringing the trim neutral you're effectively increasing the size of the elevator, but to take advantage of the effect you have to pull harder. The trade off is that you'll have to pull harder to maintain (or increase) your attitude. Unless you're absolutely out of elevator, this seems like it creates little value for the amount it increases the workload.

Eric, That makes sense. I'll give it a try tomorrow.
Thanks.

Dave, apologies for the thread hijack. This seems to be the new go-to 182 thread. Good repository for mod installs as well.
Richard My impression on my first flight was positive mainly because there wasnt a significant change in the way it “ felt” compared to the feel before the mods. Andrea also flies the plane and i didnt want any weird new flight characteristics. So, that was all fine.
Before the Spirtsman kit, i had VGs alone. The VGs, i believe, were very helpful in slow speed control response, particularly aileron response. This makes sense when you watch the several VG testing videos on youtube. You can see the boundary air staying attached to the wings all the way to the aileron.
When i added the spoertman stol, the positive aileron control remained. This is important at these ever slower speeds allowed by the sportsman kit. Positive control was excellent in all slow flight regimes, turns etc. Accelerated stalls and power on stalls were a nothing burger. My best guess after a few flights is a decrease in power- on stall speed of 5-7 mph by gps. . Indeed, it was right at 40 mph. My indicated airspeed during these tests was below 40.....around 38.
My other obsevation was that the plane felt more stable while flying an approach With 40 degrees flaps. Could have been my imagination.
After flying, andrea conveyed that the plane seemed to break ground more positively and without back pressure at the same trim setting she used before the install. This same observation was made by Mike Dorris, probably the most experienced backcountry charter pilot out here in idaho. He had the kit installed on his 180 which is used primarily to deliver mail to the backcountry ranches in winter on skiis
More testing next week at sea level. Having the leading edge painted in sacramento.

So, today I broke out all of my camping gear including my tent, bivy sacks, sleeping bags, and thermarest pads to get ready for a flying camping trip to Idaho this spring. It's been about 10 years since I've camped at Smiley Creek in the RV but I'm looking forward to more adventures in the 182. I did find that my Peak 1 multi fuel stoves have dead O rings on the main shafts so I'll fix that tomorrow by installing new O rings. In the mean time, I'm shopping for a portable camping table. Any input on what's good out there? When I pitched the tent in the back yard today I had my three year old black Labrador get in the tent with me and she was good with that. No issues at all so that was a big milestone as she will be going with us. All my other dogs hated the tent and wouldn't get in it. I'm hoping all this snow melts at some point. Dave

Here's the air mattress you want. Those 2 inch thick Thermarests are for the birds. I've had 2 of these for the past 8-10 years. The carrying case is the pump and takes about 1 minute to inflate. https://www.amazon.com/Aerobed-Pakmat-A ... g=btalk-20
