A few months ago I did clean the external cover where it contacts the windows but if the wind is blowing pretty hard I'll most likely to just leave it off to prevent any scratching. Dave I'm late to the party on this topic. I have the full cabin cover from Bruce's and can confirm the scratching issue under certain circumstances. On a desert trip I put the cover on, but after a couple of days of the wind and sand blowing it had lightly scratched the windshield by the cover moving around just slightly in the wind, but it polished right out. I would have been better off leaving the cover off, and pouring a bottle of water over the windshield to remove the dust before flight. I also have the full Kennon shade set, and agree with the heating of the plastic windshield. A better use would be to put velcro tabs on the outside of the Bruce's cover and on the inside of the Kennon shades, and after putting on the cover, put the shades on the outside of the cover to reflect the heat away. Another way to do that would be to put soft cloth on the inside of the heat shields and put the heat shields on the outside of the windshield attached by velcro spots on the windshield frame.

Paul, It's never too late to show up to the party.
I've been using the full Bruce's cover on the 182 now for a couple of years and it's worked out fine. If the wind is going to blow pretty good I just leave it off but so far I only have a couple of minor scratches from it (on the corners) and haven't given it a good effort at polishing them out. Hopefully in the next year I'll move permanently to KHII and secure a hangar out there.
Dave

So, I just spent some time going back through this post from the start to end and it's been fun. Looking back on it all I wouldn't do anything different. This has been a fun airplane that I'm putting over 100 hours a year on and I wouldn't change a thing. It's been an adventure just like I posted in the beginning and I have no regrets with my purchase. The RV-6A on the other hand only logged 15 hours last year as I just filled out the inquiry form for the county tax assessor. Decisions, decisions,.... I don't wanna sell it! Dave

Excuse my stupidity but the new leading edge of the Sportsman installs w/o removal of the original leading edge skin? How much UL does that cost?

RAS Correct. The leading edge stays. It’s still visible through the wing landing lights (if you have those), which is useful for explaining how the STOL kit is installed to people. It adds 15 pounds. Edit: here’s a picture: Attachment: D18C7A31-2E8C-4C46-9F8A-4C92B7F37DBD.jpeg

Yes on the VGs.
It’s a lot. Extended baggage, jump sests, large nose fork, big tires, wigwag wingtips.

The first 182 I flew was a 182 M back when I learned to fly, then later instruct in them. That plane became my favorite airplane to fly, and I thought they couldn't improve on the handling and performance until the flight school bought a new '73 182P. The noticeable difference was in the low speed handing with the new cuffed (or drooped) leading edge like the Sportsman leading edge. The 182M was fairly docile in the stall but the P model is even more docile. Even in a deep stall the plane can be maneuvered , flying around doing turns while in the stall with power on. I don't think it can match the Sportsman low speed handling, but the limitation for landing the 182P is the tail strike speed when it's brought in using power on, not that I'm advising that.
