Yes, that's right, that gorgeous little yellow beauty is too fast for Basic Med!

I’m pretty sure you’re wrong about that. My understanding of basic med is that it requires you to be at or below 6000#, 18000feet, and 250kias.

I’ve never even sat in a lancair, but I’d be very surprised to find out that Vne is anywhere near 250 Kias.

I think you should go buy it right now. ;)

Edit: found an online reference suggesting Vne is 235 knots, so you’re good to go.

Thanks for the information! It is appreciated!

I knew it was too fast for LSA based on chat here. During some hangar flying I was (incorrectly) told that the Lancairs 235 and 360 were too fast for Basic Med, but that some had a certificate that limited them to 248kts for overseas, whcih would qualify them for BasicMed.

The 235 on here is nice and the 360 that came up in Mariposa looks nice, too!

Altitude and speed are operational limitations. Seating and gross weight are certification limitations. As has been pointed out here, you can fly an M600 under BasicMed, just lower and slower than it is capable of.

I don't think I could feed an L39, and honestly, it's not sexy enough- but I'll grant you, they do look fun.

Not sexy enough. Guess it’s your money but man this would get me excited!

Matt: +1 - this is my bucket list work commute...

Gary, I’ll sell it to you after I’m done or my wife forces me to sell it. ;)

I fly the L-39, and I'd recommend considering it. Pretty simple aircraft and great jet bang-for-the-buck.

Parts are plentiful, and there is a lot of maintenance expertise in the US.

The ones I fly are pretty much stock and at the original factory weight. The ejection seats are hot, and those weigh a fair amount. Some of the L-39 owners have dropped the weight significantly. I know of one that is over 1000 lbs lighter. Most owners do not have hot seats, even if the seats are still installed.

To go 400 nm at 17,500, you will burn about 275 gallons. That will give you a cruise of 270 knots true. I know other pilots that cruise faster, but 270 true is how we ferry them.

A number of owners have removed the wingtip tanks and installed a "normal" wingtip. Removing the tips drops your fuel quantity from 343 gallons to 290 gallons... however these owners all claim they have the same range since the drag is so much lower. Google "Dash Aerosports L-39" to see an example. As expected, it drops the weight and increases roll rate somewhat.

Nice L-39's can be purchased for $200,000. If you drop $450,000, you can get one with a Garrett engine in it. I haven't flown one of those yet, but I sure would like to. It lowers the weight, gets rid of the APU, and has half the spool time of the stock engine.

The L-39 has some odd things about it, but overall it is enjoyable to fly around in.

It would be nice if you could bring one over to the next CJP convention Jon. ;)
