On my 601P we had to essentially remove the engine to change the back cylinders - perhaps there is a trick my techs where not aware of but it was a major deal?

Either way- Great Job!

My 500B was the same way. That Ted Smith knew how to design an airplane, but he was kind of a masochist too...

Yes drill out the rivits on the camloc fasteners, remove them (reinstall when done)
and that 1/4" with a little flexing of the panel in question is just barely enough to get the cylinder off and back on without removal. Its really ugly, but its just barely possible.

You will also need shortened non-standard cylinder base wrenches.

An update...
The 2nd failure was due to the wrong part....
I ordered a replacement cylinder and installed it in the field without internet access.
I got torques tips etc.. by phone etc...

The old cylinder was steel with long reach plugs, the incorrect replacement cylinder was chrome, short reach plugs. Without reference material I thought the color coding was chrome vs steel, alas it was also short vs long.

So I installed long reach plugs, they did not hit the piston, but stuck too far into the cylinder, they got so hot they melted, in the process the hot plug softeneed the cylinder head (or other wise got pushed by combustion pressure) to pop the helicoil out of the short reach cylinder... so the bottom plug was loose sending a jet of hot gas down on the CHT probe...

So the helicoil partially failed first causing really high cht readings, followed by the plug failing causing a loss of engine power.

Re-replaced the cylinder with the correct part, the airplane is now back in CA.
The flight home was uneventful other than the bad smoke in the Reno area...

Airplane now at my mechanics to inspect/review the cylinder change, change the oil and fix an oil leak.

Paul

Well done on multiple counts!

I think our natural tendency is to rationalize problems away. You declared, shut it down and did the analysis on the ground...and you’ll be around to fly another day.

That could have gotten really bad, really fast!

Nice result, even if a little painful on the wallet.
