I am interested in purchasing something experimental and have always liked the Glasair III. I know every airplane has pros & cons. Any of you BTers own or ever own one. I want something safe most of all. They seem to be fast and economical. Not being certified is a big plus. Being aerobatic is great. What can I expect to pay? How is support for the type? What say all of you? Thanks, VW.

Todd Sanderson (former BT member) had this one recently, and reported 212 knots on 12.5 gph; I got to ride with him in his previous Glasair.....wow! . Attachment: 81654E8D-2384-46BC-9858-A0213740913C.jpeg Attachment: 265701BA-BE69-4605-B79D-A1B3B8D420C6.jpeg

I know two guys who have had the nose gear self destruct and cause great amounts of damage and expense.
I would treat anything with this kind of high wing loading and high stall speed and sporty handling as a vfr airplane until you have lots of experience... Would not be my choice for low circling approach under a low ceiling..
But theul upside is.... They really are fast and efficient! And as an experimental, great avionics choices are available.

That’s a work of art. There is one for sale in the Asheville, NC area that is my price range that has the IO540, but it was overhauled in 1992. 1200 A&E. He wants 115k...I think this would just be a fair wx go out and have some fun airplane. Maybe some runs down to the beach.

Wonderful flying airplane... Fast and efficient...
The gear is a little fragile.
The only reason I have a Rocket instead of a glasair, SX-300, or Questair is the stall speed. If the fire goes out in any of those, it is going to be a bad day. My Rocket stalls at 50 instead of 70. That difference is huge in terms of survivability...
I could put my Rocket on a road easily.

What is this “Rocket” you speak of?

This is mine. I fly it around 200 hrs per year, mostly for transportation. Here is my recent Flightaware history. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N84MF/history I can cross the outer marker at 160kts and land 3 point on the fixed distance markers. It has incredible glide ratio with the prop back, and my prop goes to coarse pitch with loss of oil pressure. I could easily go on a gravel road or county highway if the fire goes out. And Michael is correct, flying it is 90% of the Mustang experience. Except it has a much more reliable engine...
