If the meter looks like the one in the photo posted by Del, then the post by Paul Yardy is likely right on. Just look for a brief needle movement when you turn on a large load such as landing light or pitot heat. If you have a problem with the charging system, the meter will be displaced to the left.

Or a low battery from playing with lights and avionics the needle will go to right for a while and back to center when all is good.

My friend Wayne Roberts cut the right side panel and fitted the new EDM 900 in the 180. I had my mechanic shop install it all. I gifted Wayne the original instrument cluster. Based on the prices of "new" from Cessna, $1,300 for a new ammeter gauge, that was a pretty nice gift. :bugeye:
