It appears the ammeter in the 185 isn't metering amps. The CPA board isn't very helpful and the Skywagon board is a ghost town, so I'm posting here.

Basically, the ammeter always points to zero. It seems the easiest thing would be to replace it, but a new one is $1321.24 from Cessna. Sure glad I'm selling the Bonanza, what with the outrageous cost of Beech parts and all.

It has a JPI 700 with a Volt meter, but I assume that isn't a substitute for an ammeter. There are $50 ammeters at Spruce, but they're the wrong shape.

I'm open to suggestions.

All the 180/185 guys are on supercub.org and the skywagon facebook page; the club forums are dead and CPA's demise was discussed elsewhere. Why not send the gage in to those Lock Haven guys?

Everyone jumped ship and is over at the CPS. Lots of activity and tons of help. :)

Aerospace logic have an STC'd ammeter; what size/shape is yours?

Yes, there are some familiar names on CPS!

It's rectangular, about 1.5"x2.5". The panel was new last summer and is gorgeous. It would make me cry to cut new holes and patch old ones.

You need someone who can get behind the panel with a multimeter and determine if the meter is dead or you have a wiring problem. Who have you brought it to for diagnosis?

Many A&Ps are great with mechanical stuff but cant handle simple electrical problems. You need to find someone who can diagnose a simple electrical problem.

Right, one of the SW gages. Used ones are on fleabay all the time. But I would try the Lock Haven guys first and see how much they want to take a look at your gage. And, if you have to go with a used one, I would have it checked out on the bench.

Agree.
Stuart, I think I have one if you do need one. I'll check tomorrow.

You need to see if it uses an external shunt.

If it has big heavy wires going to both sides, the shunt is internal and the meter is likely
dead.

If it has small wires going to it, the shunt is elsewhere (like on the firewall) and the small
wires are protected by small fuses which are likely the failure. They will be near the shunt
which will have heavy wires going to it.

Sounds like I need to get the avionics guy under there. Spend a little money on diagnosis before attempting treatment.

Del, let me know if you have one. Meanwhile, I’ll find out when the avionics shop can see me.

That's probably it, taking into account the window in the panel.

Stuart,
If it is the standard Cessna OEM amp meter installed, then your system is probably working as designed.

You might be able to see slight (half needle movements) if you look closely as you turn on electrical items but generally speaking it should be reading zero (no charging or discharging) of the battery one the engine is on.

Next time before you start your engine turn the master on and turn your landing lights on and you should indicate a needle movement towards the discharge direction.
