Rylan, that sounds great I think you are wise to keep it simple and build your hours. I think your budget is realistic as well. I would really encourage you to consider something just a bit bigger than the C-150 if you plan to do some cross country flying with the wife. The extra 10-15k entry price will be well worth it. I saw this Cherokee 140 the other day on controller. It has the 160hp engine which in my opinion makes it a decent plane for your mission. The first plane I owned was a Cherokee 160 and it was a great 2 person plane, and a decent 3 person plane. Simple and cheap to operate, easy to fly and land, solid in a cross wind or bumpy day. I have no relation or interest in this plane its listed for 29k maybe you could pick it up for around 24 or 25k??? When you go to sell you should get most of that back as well as half of your ADSB expense if you add it.

This 172 is in Canada but might work as well. Again listed for near 30k but you can possibly have it cheaper. I know nothing about what it takes to get a plane from Canada set up here in the US... you might check on that before making a call...

You might also look for a well maintained Tri-Pacer. I really think you will be happier with a 4 seat airplane that will give you better cross country performance. The monthly fixed costs will be about the same, but the overall usefulness of the plane and the performance will be better. I would also say try to buy something with basic IFR so you can start working on your instrument rating during this time building period as well. There is wisdom in the saying buy your last air plane first. I totally understand that's not always possible, but after you go through the process of selling 1 airplane you will understand why you don't want to have to buy and sell them on a regular basis. Getting a decent 4 seater will last you a long time, possibly even forever. Don't be afraid to offer a lower price than what is listed, no one else is. Don't be the guy that insults the owner with a lowball number half the asking price. But at the same time don't be afraid to make an offer and walk away if needed. Its a good time to be a buyer and a tough time to be a seller in the price range you are looking at. Take your time, be patient, get a great pre buy inspection at a shop you choose on whatever you buy. You are going to love owning your own plane! :thumbup:

If you only want a 150 for a couple hundred hours then you are making a mistake. That's like 2 years max. It's too much of a pain in the ass to buy and sell airplanes to go buy one knowing you only want it for a couple years.

Scott you are exactly right but you have to go through it to understand it. After going through the process of selling my 160 I decided I never wanted to sell another airplane and did my best to buy the plane I would use the rest of my life. But I think you have to go through it to get it. I also was much more aggressive as a buyer after being a seller. Knowing what the guy on the other end of the phone was going through gave me a better perspective as to how aggressive I could be as a buyer and as a result I got a much better deal on my second plane vs. my first. :dancing:

I bought a 150M to build time a few years ago, I flew it 400 hours in 6 months. It cost me, all in, every single penny including FBO fees and everything, $54/hr to run. That included a few expensive surprises.

I loved that darn thing. Bought it off the 150 forum(join it! great resource) sight unseen, selling it was the easiest thing in the world. When someone suggests a 3 day prebuy (as someone suggested me), just find another buyer.
