Not a 185, but my 180, which at this point is "dirty", will true 137 knots, four way speed check, at whatever density altitude will allow a full 75% power. That is full fuel, 62 gallons, and one person.
I'm going to "refurbish" the airplane and install some speed mods, including smaller wheels and wheel pants, but at this point, I don't even have strut fairings. When I do need an engine overhaul, I'll do the Pponk rebuild and new prop, but that is along way off.
When all is done, I expect an honest 150 knot airplane.

The new-to-me 185E that I’ve been flying seems to be good for 165mph IAS (ballpark) in cruise without pushing it too hard. Two pilots, 40-80 gallons, light luggage. Lycon IO-550, MT 3 blade, Snyder speed kit, 8.5’s, 1800# EW. I need to do some proper GPS runs to better assess TAS performance.

Gotta love it! 150 knots is doable MC I installed the Selkirk fiberglass side panels, new headliner, had seats recovered in leather, and the rubber flooring. Could not be happier, well almost, thinking the diamond vinyl flooring might look even better. John Grady

Chuck,
Wayne's buddy, Chris Rudd, the IA who comes up a couple of times a year, is scheduled to finish the panel work before going to the avionics shop. I had rather have that done in mine or Wayne's hangar so we can "fix" anything we find that doesn't suit.
At this point, I have a PSA audio panel and the EDM 900. Best guess of added avionics is:
1. Aspen E5 OR Garmin G5 for primary nav indicator. 2. 430W 3. SL 30 and 206 indicator 4. GTX 335 for ADSB out. 5. TruTrac A/P
Also hard mount 796 on right panel and Stratus for ADSB in, both of which I already have.
You can see how we mounted the EDM 900 on right panel. I can see it fine, but I might move it to the center stack, top unit.

Regarding the MSB, I just did my 1955 C-180 a couple of weeks ago as part of an annual, and it was not difficult to comply with; took about 2 hours total, but a borescope is really helpful. You do not have to remove the horizontal stab off the airplane, which requires removing the vertical stab first. My stab was fine with no problems, but it was rebuilt in 2005 by Beegles, due to hail damage; I've heard that problems have definitely been found in older airplanes. To get back to the OP; my 55 180 has an IO-550D from AirPlains, and a Snider speed kit with panties, and the WingX wingtip extensions, which are really helpful at high altitudes. I am in Reno, so rarely go anywhere X/C below 10,000 feet. At 11,500' I true a solid 155 Knots LOP. and 165 Knots ROP, which I almost never use. I have got about 2,000 hours now on this engine/airframe combination, and I can do these numbers very reliably. Mike

Quote: Michael what kind of surface winds landing make you think twice before going?
Well, that's a good question, but for me a direct steady crosswind of 15 knots is OK, but 15 G 20 or higher is uncomfortable for me unless I have no choice; if the runway is wide I would land near the downwind side of the runway, and roll out diagonally if I can. I have seen good pilots land in more, but I'm not one of those! Mike

Stuart: I also had the entire tail remanufactured by Beegles, an outstanding facility. I have no doubt that my components will be in good order, but will comply with the MSB as an abundance of caution. Part of my armamentarium is a discarded bronchoscope that does wonders when inspecting the most inaccessible areas.
Michael: That IO-550 from AirPlains sounds awesome. My speeds are not as great, but I am happy with a solid 150 Kt. from Steve Knopp's O-470-50 (Mine is also a 1955 180). I have Dane Wagner's Leading Edge Exhaust, which is a great improvement over the original.
I don't know if you remember Nick Mardis from the old, wild New Year's Skywagon parties at Lajitas: NOBODY could touch his 180 in the races over the Rio Grand through the Santa Elena Canyon... I attach a pic of how we went about our "seaplane" ratings in the lower latitudes. P.S.: I later got my real one at Kenmore Air.
Best,
Tom

Gentlemen: I believe that it is time to consider a reunion of like-minded aviators. Perhaps the Skywagon Fly-in at Garden Valley, ID. in late June would be a great place to meet. I welcome your ideas.
