Hi guys,

Just wondering for the 185 drivers. What does your plane indicate when cruising at 65% and 7500 ft? TAS would be great info as well.

Hi Patrick, I had a 1984 C-185 for 11 years but I sold it 2 years ago. It had 800 X 6 tires but I got a field approval for the installation of C-206 wheel pants and with just my wife and I in the airplane and typically full fuel I could count on 145kts TAS the majority of the time. Sorry but can't remember what indicated was, I have slept since then :D

At 24 squared I see 135-140 kts on an A185F with horton stol, and 8.50 tires (no wheel pants), IO520D.

I have a 1965 C-185D IO-470F

When on wheels, (8.50) + 6 inch Bubble windows
at 7500 ft
64% 2300 / 22 inches = 11.8 G/H 65 % on JPI 900
TAS = 150 mph / 130 kts

At 7500' you will be WOT and indicated around 135 Kts.
IO-550 engine, 800 tires with bubble windows/floats/ski fittings and lots of drag.

Here is 130 kts indicated at 9000 ft LOP @ 13 gph.

Hey Ron, it'll be a little faster at 2400 with that prop.

One thing pretty well known is that some are faster than others. Not sure anyone really knows why. Of course, around here, you are still talking about who is the tallest midget at the circus.

One speed mod many don’t think about is a heavier tailwheel. Think CG. Check airflow in cruise with string back there and your wing man taking pictures will tell you the wind is blanked out around TW in cruise. Best extra weight you can add.

Hi John, good to see you here on BT. If any one would know, you would be the guy, with all the testing, mods and engine changes you have done on your 180 and 185 aircraft. I've talked about the difference in speeds in the 180/185 type aircraft on another thread here on BT. Some are born fast and then there are the rest.

Man, 135 kts indicated at 9000' is blazing fast for a 185. Didn't think a 550 would make that much difference in cruise. I'm impressed.

Mine has bubble windows, Sneider kit, stock IO-520d, 8.50s and a Hatzell 80" three blade.

At 7500', WOT/2400 (almost exactly 65%) is 140 kts true @ 15gph ROP. 132 kts true @ 11gph LOP (LOP is just under 120 KIAS).

Mine isn't a lightweight, but I can still load full fuel, four 200lb people and 154 lbs of bags and be at gross and in CG. At gross (near it anyway, I've never managed to get it to max gross) it loses 3-4 kts true.

Best all around airplane I've ever owned.
