My $.02, have owned a 310F for 5 years.
310 Pros:
-Way more room than a Baron, I’m over 6’3” and I can’t fit comfortably in a Baron, even a new 2017 (my friend has one). -Classic/Retro looks -Lighter than a Baron, less lbs/hp -Stable IFR platform, but fairly pitch sensitive -My ventilation is great (hoses need to replaced due to age) -No magnesium flight controls -The Twin Cessna Flyer type club is a terrific organization
310 Cons:
-Every airframe is extremely old, many haven’t been maintained -Corrision, the gear rigging, ancient heaters and avionics are significant issues -Cessna is no longer producing the 310, parts can be an issue -Good 310s that have been updated can’t be sold for the upgrades invested, I honestly cant imagine ever selling mine. -You really need a mechanic that knows the 310, getting harder to find -The later models will not fit in a standard hangar

Flying a friend’s 310 vs my Baron:
- The 310 feels like a larger airplane, sits higher, cabin has a mini aisle - 310 feels heavier on the control. Roll and pitch feel truck like - Baron feels like a sports car, bank yaw and pitch are crisper - Baron has better visibility from all seats - Baron has more power and better climb rates (IO-520s and IO-550s vs IO-470s) - 310 has better fuel burn (again 470s -vs- 520s / 550s) - Short nose 310 does not have storage, but has long flat wing lockers, takes smaller packages, along with rear storage - Baron has nose storage (up to 320 lbs) and rear cabin storage (120 lbs) for bulk items, no wing lockers - 310 panel feels like an airliner layout, reminds me of a DC-10 - 310 flaps are “infinitely settable” but you have to slide the flaps to where you want them - Baron flaps have only 3 “set and forget” knotches

Looks count. The classic shape of the 310s is definitely easier on the eyes: . Attachment: AAC68U0180.jpg . Attachment: C68U0145.1.jpg . Attachment: A.DJI_0006.1.JPG

Ref 310... Great looking. Low maintenance/expense (for a NA twin). Solid build. Excellent IFR platform.
Negatives... 5th and 6th seats unusable except for children or light baggage. Lateral flight characteristics take some time to get use to. Don't bump head on tip tanks.

The R model has the extended nose for a baggage compartment with a max load of 350 lbs.

The 310R I've been flying has IO-520s, and the flaps have only two positions - approach and full. To me, it feels very comparable to the 58 Baron I flew last weekend. The Baron felt like a somewhat heavier Bonanza, the 310R felt bigger and more solid. I liked both A LOT, but then I've never flown a plane I didn't like.

The great thing about the R model is that with the VG gross weight increase, useful can be around the 1900-2000 lb mark. It a mini-C421. You can load up wing lockers and nose baggage, and put six adults in and go somewhere. It’s a capable airplane, VW.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback and perspectives. Although I honestly like the looks of the 310 better, I wound up purchasing a 1969 B55 due to a variety of factors listed above. One of the big ones was short field performance. The Beech market is much more robust as well which will ease any pain from investments and make exiting easier when the time eventually comes (hopefully not soon!). I have to say though the air scoop on the A55 I flew was amazing. It's like sticking your head out the window. The B55's air system is OK, but not nearly as strong as the scoop. Here is the one I'm talking about.. http://www.csobeech.com/images/BaronVentScoop.png

Mine does, a '64.
