What about the Nav Tronic 400 autopilots? Are they good autopilots? Still serviceable?

You have no idea. The 310 is waaaaayyyyyyyy less expensive. :lol:

Ha Ha - I have a pretty darn good idea. Twice.

In the past 10 years, I've gone from a 310Q to a 340A to a D55 baron, 2 V35 Bonanzas and 2 years ago, I went back to a 1968 310N.....I loved them all !! The D55 was a little rocket, could do 200K @ 10K'.....However, nothing compares to the cabin size of the 310 and that is why I bought another one.....as an A&P IA, I am able to maintain my own planes and honestly, each one has it's pros and cons....neither is "better or worse" as far as maintenance or parts. They all do about the same speed, with about the same cost. After a few short hours in any twin Cessna, they start to feel very stable and normal....I agree with previous comments that the Baron might be a bit more "sporty" in its handling however, the 310 is very stable if all flight profiles (as is the Baron)....for me, the big draw is the 8" wider cabin....VERY COMFORTABLE....and the wife likes it !!!!

I guess I'm neutral on the issue because I've always been told that if it has wheels, wings, or %#$@, you're going to have trouble with it. ;)

Have about 800 hours in 310, 150 in Bonanzas and about 50 in Barons. The 310 is the most airliner-like of the lot, sits higher, has way more room, and can be kept on the ground up to blue line if desired. The Baron is about 10 knots faster (P model), quieter and substantially smaller, both physically and mentally.

310 handles winds and gusts with aplomb, the inertia of up to 300# at the tips is quickly mastered - let the plane fly itself and make small corrections. Handles tremendous crosswinds by virtue of great handling properties in he flare. Baron is similar, but feels lighter to me, even though the gross weight is higher.

Baron is tight IMHO if at or above 5’10”.

Cessna 400A and B autopilots are very good attitude based autopilots. Three to five shops in country appear to be happily keeping them going. Mine is rock solid, running through the ubiquitous King-55 HSI.

I have numerous time flown the 310 coast to coast and back in 7 to 10 days of calendar time. My fiend has done same in his Baron, suggesting they are both great airplanes. But, the 310 is so stable, that when I first had the aircraft and prior to getting AP tuned, I observed poor AP autopilot performance 15 minutes after engaging. Except that AP was disengaged and aircraft just droned on straight and level.

So here are my own impressions after a hefty 3.0 hours in a 310Q and A55 (both rentals).

As others have said, the 310 is exceptionally stable in flight and the interior is definitely taller and wider. However the short field performance was less than stellar due to the split flaps. It was very stable to fly but not particularly fun.
Things I liked:
* Wider cockpit
* Excellent visibility
* Very stable in flight (probably due to fuel placement)
* Clicking mixture levers with number positions - an unexpected delight.

Things I did not like:
* Short field performance was not good due to the split flaps. Also in general it seemed to eat a lot of runway to get off compared to the Seneca or A55.
* Placement of the elevator trim wheel - it definitely caused some right knee discomfort.
* Marginal ventilation (but not as bad as Seneca)

The A55 has the same cabin width as the V35B I had flown (obviously) which is not so wide and not so tall. It flies like a Beech, which is to say it's a pilots airplane.
Things I liked:
* Flight characteristics are great
* Landings are sooo smooth. I don't know if this is due to gear construction or it just lands easier...but same net outcome.
* Excellent visibility
* Better short field performance (~1500 ft?). Still working on this technique. Seneca still reigns here with ~1000 ft to get off the ground in my experience.
* Yoke bar provides a good place to rest your arm for the levers, making their high placement not as much of a comfort issue as I expected.
* EXCELLENT interior air flow once at speed. There was a scoop on top of the cabin that blew tons of air in. It looks like this isn't present on the B55s though?

Things I disliked:
* Pilots footwell, left side, that inward sloped section gives my left foot/ankle fits after a few hours. Same as in the V35B. Grr.
* Flap switch placement behind the yoke bar.

I noticed on many 310 that the fromt seats don't have a headrest, while the back seats do.
Is this common? Can they be switched out?

MH,
I'm confused. You're a jet jockey. Why are you slumming in that old 310? Can't imagine the next trophy girl friend being willing to take a trip in that old bugger. Why don't I take that off your hands so you aren't embarrassed at the FBO. :D

There’s a 310 for rent at Carolina Aviation at KAIK Aiken, SC. It’s not a looker but I know of 3 people who have received their multi ratings in it during the past year and one commercial multi.

Good luck,
Don
