From my F4 typed next door neighbor:

I was hooked until I got to the part about it having “the less potent J79-GE-2 engine.”

This was sent to me by a buddy:

Even if someone could find an extra $3.9M to buy it, operating & maintenance costs would rule most of us out. The F-4 in full afterburner burns 1550 pounds of fuel per minute (@ 6.7 lbs/gal x $5.50/gal for Jet A) ==è $1,272/minute

Internal fuel varies, but in ballpark of 12,000 lbs which gives you about 7 minutes 45 seconds before you flame out. Even at cruise power, (3000 lbs/hr/engine x 2 engines = 6,000 lbs/hr = 896 gal/hr x $5.50/gal = $4,928/hr), this is not an economical ride!

The message to younger pilots - - - join the military and let the taxpayers pay for your gas!

If it helps you make the decision, I think the article notes that the engines are currently at an overhauler and are being converted to the bigger versions.

From the ad:

Engines: to be overhauled

General Electric J-79-8 upgraded to -15

3x engines currently at Aero Turbine awaiting overhaul

2x engines in California as spares

And it's been more than forty years but I seem to recall fuselage fuel was 7400# and there was another 2600 in the wings for 10000 internal.

In the C model, it was ~8000 pounds in the fuselage and ~4000 in the wings for a total of 12000. With full external wing and belly tanks, it bumps up to about 21000 total.
The combat fuel flow charts top out at approximately 1650 lbs/minute...just about 12 1/2 minutes from full fuel to becoming a very heavy glider.
Yep..I still have my RF-4C pubs.

Another Recce puke. Mine is in my bookshelf behind me. Where did you fly the RF-4C? I had two tough tours, Sunny Zwei and Bergstrom.
