This one's for a friend. You know the guy: his standards of maintenance are way better than you can imagine.

This plane and my Bo have shared a hangar for 7 years or so, and she is a stone-cold beauty!

The "Yellow Bird"is a stunner, near and far, but the instrument panel always makes peoples' jaws drop. I've flown her, and this is a sweet 140.

If you need one, or know someone who does, take a gander!

That will make someone a fantastic first plane. Cannot call Cherokees underrated, but their capabilities are pretty high for an inexpensive plane. The lower HP models are a grear deal. Throw a powerflow exhaust on and your almost to 180 performance. .

I have no stake in the sale, but as nice as it looks in pictures, in person, it's way nicer. A really, really good bird.

Any guesses how much I’d have to spend for an engine overhaul?
Anyone feel like flying it to Oregon if I buy it?

One of the best attributes of my 140 is the cabin heat. The single large diameter muffler behind the engine makes for a very effective heat exchanger. No way I would sacrifice this for a powerflow system, where cabin heat is an afterthought, just for a few extra HP. The biggest source of drag on the 140 is the blunt face of the nose-bowl compared to the higher HP variants, so I doubt there would be much of a performance improvement anyway. YMMV
140's are a great, easy to fly, very forgiving and simple to maintain airplane.

Am I reading the ad correctly that has the original engine and one cylinder replaced?

Figure on 18-25K depending on the condition of the exhaust, baffling, generator/alternator, starter, etc. Could be as high as 30 if you do some upgrades; 160hp and a prop re-pitch are a couple examples.

If you are serious about that, then I could possibly be up for the trip. Send me a PM if interested.

For a 320?

I think $18k would likely buy you a very good field overhaul.

But I would fly it another 1,000 hours before I split the case, unless it started talking.

---

Edit: A Factory Overhaul from Lycoming is only $22,766.00 from Airpower.

Gosh, I understand your statement from an HOURS standpoint, but it’s been 54 years since that engine was new, and it’s never been overhauled!

Do you still stand by that line of thinking that you’d run it another thousand hours.. potentially 64 years SNEW?

Yes, for a 320... Don't forget there is a considerable difference between the cost of the bare engine sitting in the AirPower warehouse and the total cost by the time the engine is actually installed on the airplane and it is back in service. Labor alone could be 3-6K depending on what all need attention after all these years. A couple new bushings for the air box, replace the baffle material at $100/roll, 4 new motor mounts and so on. All that little crap nobody thinks about gets expensive.

A simple annual can top 2K it seems these days. It never ceases to amaze me how bloody long the little things take, and if you are paying somebody to do it all it can really add up.

Why would you even think of overhauling it. Those things can go 5000 hours.

Apologies. I know this plane's condition. It's amazing. "All that little crap" is perfect. Seriously.

I'd launch into IMC in it today. If you knew the seller (and the prior owner, whom I know well, as well), you'd understand.

Prior owner won best in show for another plane at OSH a few years back. Prior owner has also flown around the world, and to Antarctica, in a single. Actually, more than once, and in more than one single. He applied the same standard of care to every plane he has owned. Current owner applies an amazing standard, too.

Of course, it all comes down to someone taking a look - don't expect anyone to take my word for it (nor should they). Betting that first serious looker, will buy. Just a hunch.
