1) your instinct is to duck. Anytime I load up in a helicopter even though I know it won't hit me guess what... I duck. I can't make myself stand up and walk under that thing.

Personally I think people getting their heads chopped off will be far from the biggest issue with this thing.

For all you guys that live on hundreds of acres and your work is on hundreds of acres.... You're a tiny fraction of the population required to make these things profitable. I'm not debating the technology. I'm debating the infrastructure required to make a flying car usable for commuting.

Of course, as we all know, in an airplane when all else fails you still have wings. What do you have in this drone? a parachute? What if you're only 50' off the ground? 100'? 200'? 300"..... It's not enough.

The whole industry is counting on that but it seems like a big if. The FAA might go along with it being just a drone, the passengers just cargo, if it's only preprogrammed on the ground but if you can control it while riding in it, even just to change destinations, I don't see any reason to think that they will consider it anything other than a manned aircraft requiring a pilot's certificate.

To all that keep talking about decapitations, the video from Oshkosh shows people walking under the blade upright with plenty of clearance. Are you thinking the technology doesn’t exist to make it a foot taller? Have we forgot we each have one at ground level on the front of our airplanes?
The concept is it is so easy to fly that new a certification for pilot will have to be developed, I get that it may take the FAA forever to do that. But a lot of people are already in love with drones. Take the sport pilot written, then get checked out in what? 5hrs.? Not one single touch and go to do. Up button, down button. Joy stick. How much simpler can it get. Or just enter a destination. A millennial’s dream.

My family farm is 8 miles from the airport. It would be the ultimate in cool to fly this from Farm to airport. A Kitfox won’t work. And plowing runways is a never ending PIA, the existing pavement in front of the garage is plenty big for this.
I get that it won’t work to land on the mall parking lot. But the roof has a lot of room.

Not for everyone, but I believe they could sell these in good numbers.
It’s a gateway airplane, like weed. It will lead to harder planes like a... Bonanza?

Assuming it stays upright and working properly, with other flying drones and their spinning blades next to it, in gusting winds and other people loading and unloading, on the roof of the mall, with thousands of people walking around. What could go wrong?

Flying cars will work when they can fly around like the ones in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.

As a commercial helicopter pilot, I know one thing that seems to get us is power lines and we watch out for them and still pilots fly into them. The first time this thing flies into a set of wires landing in a tight spot they'll be done. They won't be high enough to blow the chute.

A basic comparison would be to compare disc loading, the weight support per SF of prop/rotor disc area, analogous to wing loading. The higher the disc loading, the strong the wash under it. This is one reason the V-22 shears branches off trees, it has way more disc loading than a Blackhawk, for example.

An R-22 has 2.6 lb/sf disc loading. I estimate this thing has 7 foot diameter rotors, in 4 places (you don't get 8 since they are in the same area), and gross weight of about 1000 pounds, so that's 6.5 lbs/sf.

Thus the downwash will be stronger than an R-22, but over a smaller area. It will kick up some dust and make stuff fly about. You'll need a clear are to land in and hope no large FOD gets picked up by the rotor wash and ends up going through your disc.

The Moeller Air Car (now Sky Car) is just around the corner. Well, it's been just around the corner for 45 years or so I guess. But, any day now! I've got a pal from back in Boy Scouts that still carries around a Popular Mechanics with it, he's waiting too.
