How much is a bunch?
How much time does it take (on average) to be safe in the T6?

Started the paint process in Nov. was a long haul to get done. We've just been quiet about it until now. It looks very different from what it was. I think most people will like it.

A few listed right now. I found three from 2mil to 4 mil. I can’t even imagine the operating budget. At least 100K a year is my guess, probably a lot more.
Probably a bit like the famous line attributed to Vanderbilt in the context of America,s Cup racing: if you have to ask..... you probably can’t afford it. The pilot/owner of the un-named plane said, "Lots of people ask what it's like owning a Mustang. I tell them it's like owning a dragon. It wakes up in the morning and says, "I'm hungry!", so you say, "Ok, what would you like for breakfast?", and the dragon says back, "I'll start off with 300 pounds of Kobe beef!"......and all you can say is, "well okay then!"....."

Oh man, I love the dragon analogy! We had a couple based with us over the years back in our FBO days and the thrill of being around them never went away for me. I'll absolutely have one if the Powerball folks ever call.
Todd, off topic but my dad and I are swinging through your TUL facility this Saturday morning in the CJ3 we manage and fly...getting some Jet A and sandwiches on our way to TEX. Will say hello on the off chance you'll be around.

Probably a bit like the famous line attributed to Vanderbilt in the context of America,s Cup racing: if you have to ask..... you probably can’t afford it. Prop AD every 5 years on Ham Std Hydromatics. 7-8K If you Cuffs on the props that are the new installs that lasts 10-15 years. 9-12K Coolant Radiators- 30Kish for a new Martin, lasts 1000 hrs. We are running a Pacific Oil Cooler Alum core type, rather than cooper core, around 20K Engine O/H or IRAN 100 to 200K with a bunch of variables. Several types of heads and banks, Head and Cylinder bank is a one piece assembly for each side of 6 cylinders. It is removable as one piece exposing the 6 pistons. There are Packard -7 and later -9 as well as several late Rolls Royce types used on the P-51. Later is better engineering. These are considered Transport Heads and Banks as usage was on Transports and Airliners (Canada built a DC-4 Version with 4 Transport Merlins called a Northstar). Later Tech but usually higher time from droning around on long trips. Transport H/Bs are more dollars as well. You do Heads and Bank IRAN with new rings, maybe pistons, about 350-500 hrs. Rest of the motor you hope for 700-1000 hrs. Cuff Blade Prop are more desirable, most built used these, late war came out with Paddle Prop. Cuff Prop 150-175K. Paddle blades 100 to 175K. New Paddle Blades have been recently made in Czech Republic by Avia. When fitted with NOS parts you can have a New Prop. Airframes range from Pretty Original, some work done as mini restorations in areas over the years up to virtually all new parts. Several shops make parts. There is a Type Certificate as most are in the Limited Category. TC held by Cal Pacific Airmotive, http://www.calpacificairmotive.com

Forgot- Cruise at about 65 GPH. Carb automatically meters fuel so no LOP or ROP to debate.
Oil change each 25 hrs. I fill till I get the right level, buy oil in 55 gal drums, somewhere around 15-18 gallons. 2 coolant systems, main and after coolant. 20 some gallons there. Hyd system thrown in for good measure.

Username Protected wrote: Get a bunch of T-6 time 1st. How much is a bunch? How much time does it take (on average) to be safe in the T6? The owner of the bare metal P-51 bought a T-6 about 7-8 years ago and the P-51 almost 5. He flies a lot, now has a TBM930 as well. Tailwheel time is important. Warbird flying is a lot of energy management to flop around safely. Its about learning numbers to do things by. T-6 is great for that. Just as gathering with Beech Types, doing things together with others has a lot of reward. So challenges of formation flying and aerobatics is part of the growth you experience for most pilots. With this having mentors is very important. So how much time does it take to get safe in a T-6? Depends on your experience. TW experience is a plus. You can start TW time in a Cub, we have a L-4. Warbird Adventures in FL is one place you can go train in a T-6. NATA is a North American Trainer club that is a great resource as well.
