Prop noise from RR Dart powered G-1’s & F-27’s were about the loudest with props. I once saw a chart showing the dB noise ratings of non-compliant Stage 3 civilian bizjets under 75,000 lbs., the AC-1121 Jet Commander took the prize as it was rated even noiser than the four engines on the P&W powered L-1329 JetStar! The Stage 3 noise limits greatly contributed to the demise of most of the first generation bizjets.

A Harrier in hover is pretty loud too, mainly because it doesn't diminish as the plane moves away.

About 20 years ago at the GAPAN airshow in the UK, I stood on a taxiway near two hovering Harriers. It was so loud, I couldn't hear the guy next to me shouting into my ear!

In the early nineties, I remember sitting in a car on the ramp near the end of the runway at Nellis, waiting for a pair of F-111s to take off. That was also loud, but I remember it more for the intense physical vibration shaking the Chrysler K-car I was riding in!

Loudest aircraft I've ever heard: The Space Shuttle on re entry at Lakeland SNF, the double sonic booms.
Loudest aircraft engine noise I've ever heard: F4 Phantom at Lakeland SNF, high speed pass right over top of me.
Quietest aircraft I've ever heard: B2 Stealth Bomber, at Lakeland SNF, cruise pass low right over my head. I didn't hear it until it was right on top of me, and then as it passed I just heard a quiet whoosh.
