I wish my Father In Law was still around to ask about this. He did a lot of work on this engine, and solved a fuel issue so the SR71 could set the speed record.

Pretty complex.

If you are ever in Tucson stop by the Pima air,and space museum. A couple of years ago I stoped by there. When I came to the sr71 I engaged the docent. I spoke with him for about an hour - I wish I could recall his name. He was an amazing gentleman who had been involved with the development of the J58. I wished I had had more time and I wish now I had been able to record his recounts.

I was told that in certain flight conditions, the intake generates up to 70% of the forward thrust.

Maybe 70% of the compression ratio (which seems plausible, if just).

An intake can't generate thrust. If you invent that, you will be rich and change science.

That makes more sense. I definitely misunderstood and should have followed up. I'd say something like that is plausible, because the guy I was talking to flew the SR71.

Imagine if Frank Murray had been flying the hot-rod’d model that evening. Air Force, must die.

And it was designed by engineers in white shirts and ties using slide rules.
