Friend of mine let his lapse too. He said something about getting his glider instructor add-on to reinstate the whole certificate.

Is it not a full re-do of the CFI initial?

Oh man I feel for you. Everything and anything is fair game I guess. Been working on your cross controlled stalls? :duck:

I had a pre-checkride sit down with the DPE to talk about that stuff (i stupidly let mine lapse too awhile back). But I think the others are right, anything on the PTS/ACS are fair game.

Having a pregame conversation tomorrow night; the goal is to do a gentlemans course. Not planning on doing this for a living just maybe want to teach the wife to fly or sign off a bfr. I did this when I was 21 and remember it being a nightmare checkride in a 172rg.

I just did my ASE initial in August. Oral was 6 hours and flying was 2. I would think any or all may be applicable here, depending on the DPE.

Just a hunch, but thinking the longer the length of expiration, the longer the practical.

Please let us know how it goes!

Most have no idea how hard a cfi checkride is, I am absolutely terrified of this renewal. It was a nightmare 15 ish years ago

With your CFI aren't you able to give flight instruction in your Citation? If so, doesn't the examiner have to assume that is what he is signing off on?

All the requirements are spelled out in the "Reinstatement" section of the CFI PTS.

Have fun,

George

Do you have a CFII? Just do that checkride, or MEI. Doing one of the ratings you have renews them all.

I did mine a couple of years ago. It was an all day deal, getting into IACRA and paper work. As has been stated, you are fair game for anything. My examiner wanted to see me teach lazy eights, steep turns, emergency descents, and short field landings in my 182.

I don't know what plane you intend to use, but I would get proficient in all maneuvers from the right seat, because that is what you will be doing. Good luck, I don't think I'd mention a gentleman's rating, as there is only one standard to them.

I'm sure you won't let it lapse next time Michael. :D

All depends on the examiner as many have said. I knew the examiner that did my initial CFI pretty well, he really went into the FOI. Most assume by this point you can fly an airplane well, but can you impart that knowledge to a new student? Since the paper work has now gone all electronic be sure to know that VERY well. Why? Because the examiner has to deal with the screwups instructors make. So makes their job more work. Be very familiar with the requirements to sign a student off for a test and have a current copy of AC 61-65G. Read it.
When doing any maneuver talk your way thru it. Explain what and why you do something.
Forgetting to do clearing turns is usually a hot button bust.

And most important. After you get thru this put a reminder on your phone calendar for 21 months from now that repeats every 2 years. (Start CFI renewal). I’ve done the American Flyers for ever. Paid $149 and never pay again. Just hit next on the iPad every 5mins and in about an hour take a test. Takes me about 2-3 days to get thru during my sitting time.

Even though he is rated in the citation the exanimer wouldn’t assume or care. The CFI tends to be mostly focused on can you teach. Even if he did the renewal in the citation, since Michael is tailwheel rated he could be planning on doing only dong primary private pilot ratings in a Pitts S2. LOl.

Maybe you will get lucky. My friend just did his CFI reinstatement so he could teach his son. 2 hours. Examiner spent half the time giving him hints of what he has seen problems with with applicants lately. Said it was actually a lot of fun.

Pretty sure I could never forget on my own. I'm inundated with FIRC ad postcards.

I've done two CFI renewal checkrides. No big deal, both were like a checkride SHOULD be - they made sure I knew what I was doing and knew where to go to get answers. Rather than insisting that I knew everything and could do everything.
