The decision ultimately comes down to mission. I wanted to make an M2 work, but ultimately I ended up putting a deposit on a 960. The M2 fell short in range and runway performance for me, and it made little sense for the frequent short flights I do between Tampa and Miami. I have a second home in Utah and fly Tampa to KHCR frequently. Headwinds in the winter really cut into the M2 range going west. I looked at the POH for both planes and it looked like a sweat to do the westbound trip with one stop. As bad as the winds can be in the low 20s, they’re worse higher up, unless you can get above 450. Coming back I often stop at SAF and like to make that leg to Tampa non stop in all seasons, due to frequent weather in the southeast. I’m often put down early coming into Florida and frequently have deviations for military ops, so I worried about the M2 doing it non stop in the summer, when you can have headwinds going east. Nothing worse than sweating fuel while you’re surrounded by convection. Also, I frequently deal with ice on the ramp, taxiways, and runway. Without beta I would have been stuck there a few times last year. The M2 is a great plane, and I wanted to make it work, but in the end it didn’t seem like the best fit for my mission. The type didn’t factor into the decision either. I have no issues with that. Hope that helps you get a glimpse into the decision making process.

Curious what about your mission you weren't able to do in the M600?

None. The M600 is a great plane. I’ve been really happy with it. I just wanted something faster. It makes zero financial sense.

"Because I want to" is a completely valid rationalization when it comes to airplanes.

I am sure you already know this- but you are going to love the TBM. if you have the chance, go to Tarbes, tour the factory, and fly your plane back to the US.

I flew one back last September- it was an unforgettable and unique experience, and an incredible demo of what the airplane is capable of.

Thanks. I flew a 940 and was impressed with it.

I asked about picking the plane up in France and was encouraged, but I haven’t yet followed up. I’ve wanted to make that flight to at least cross it off the bucket list, and this is a good opportunity. The only part I dread is the commercial flight over. I haven’t flown commercial in over four years.

Jack, sometimes the turboprop is the best way to go. Sounds like you made a very good decision!

Thanks. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking. I really did want an M2 but it just didn’t work as well for my missions.

How much faster do you think the 960 will be vs. the M600?
