Tom or another Ins guy jump on. What would be minimum for SIC. Thanks Mark for the info.

Hi Rocky-
It is possible for an insurance policy to cover a well qualified PIC (school current in type and higher jet time) and an SIC as you noted. The SIC would at a minimum need to meet Part 61 requirements as qualified in the 31 (3 bounces, ground school etc).

We have a handful of policies with very similar requirements - the issue is the owner of the aircraft is not likely to get very high limits of liability so there is a trade-off with having a lesser experienced SIC (as noted here) approved on the insurance policy. Also not a lot of underwriting options as most insurers want to see a fairly strong SIC in this class of aircraft. I wouldn't say that arrangement however you mentioned is commonplace but under certain conditions is potentially doable.

We would slow to 250 below 10 and it would seem like you were crawling; shove hard on the throttles and it would plant you in the back of your seat. We’d stop in ABQ going to SMO or LEX going to TEB. It was short legged but fun to fly.

Leaving SD area when they stop our climb in the teens I let it accelerate right to the barber pole, then hint to ATC that I can zoom through FL250 in about 90 seconds.... :pilot:

No joke.
Its badass.

The Lear?
Yeah tell me about it.

It gets mean and can actually pitch into a buffet.

I have recurrent next month, I can't recall if the Overspeed system eventually pitches up or just puts out the boards but either way it does stuff...

0.83M Overspeed is tied into the stick puller.

Maybe we need to start a Lear channel... I know we could play the tone generator test over the intercom to annoy the pax.

As they weren’t already annoyed at boiling in the back so we can be comfy in cockpit. Thank god for heated windows and floorboards.

Our cockpit suffered from Texas summertime heat but our AC seemed to keep them comfortable via power cart. I’d really love to push on those throttles again. Lots of fond memories terrorizing the world in my own company sponsored hot rod. I guess it was the first glass cockpit yet still had the steam engine gauges. The 40 series went full glass. I got to fly one of those one time. Where do you do school? I did all mine in Tucson.

They are bringing a guy in to do recurrent in the plane.
This one has dual 750s so the avionics are nice.

This one only has the single AC Evaporator so the AC just sucks. I think there is an option on later models for a second evaporator up front.

Such an easy, delightful plane to fly. Like a Baron but way easier.
I need to get some Falcon time... I hear they are even better.

But man the 31a is hard to beat. All mechanical, no hydraulics (Except gear, flaps and brakes and thrust reversers and spoilers I guess lol..). But cable flight controls at least. There is a reason Air Ambulance picks certain planes.

Old Learjet pilots joke that they usually just declare a fuel emergency after V1.

Old 20 Series Learjets, Fuel Critical when you start #2 engine.

Fuel burn on ground at idle is the same as fuel burn at FL410 cruise.

I haven't given up on these wonderful airplanes. I finished my 61.58 and single pilot exemption ride today which was a great experience in my rental 500 which is actually the nicest flying Citation I've flown because it is so light. I had the blast doing the checkride; it is fun when you a prepared. I have II sitting in my hangar so this is the next step.

Looked hard at the 31A. Beautiful plane. Bottle rocket. Thomas has great accolades for it. Lot of pro pilots say no way its a 4000’ landing strip plane. Short legs. Thomas got a field STC to put the 750’s in yet they don’t couple to the AP. The rest of the panel is strictly Obsolete, hard to find parts for, Honeywell. And probably impossible to reinvent the panel. Moving on to the 45. Just find it hard to believe I can start there. Have to be a FO for a while. I’m cool with that.

I reread this entire thread over the past few days and felt I needed to add to it. I too own a 501sp as a result of Tarver and his initial post. I’m super happy with the plane and looking forward to more flights. The week in Sarasota for the type rating was terrific. There’s lots of knowledge and available support for these planes. The plane performs as expected and offers few surprises. It’s a great way to get around.
