Six degrees of separation baby. Small world. Especially in aviation. Do you know Jose Perez? He called me looking for a PIC for the 501P. He manages the 560 I have flown on Rocker trips. I couldn’t because I was contract flying another 560 (N561PA) for a family out of Miami. That contact came from the fact that the aircraft manager for 561PA and I both had same Citation Simcom instructor. I connected Jesse and Jose.

And for those wondering how to get contract work on the side...that’s how it happens. You get known in a network. Help a guy in a pinch and word gets around. I know a guy who knows a guy.

Jose flys my friends CJ for him also. Flew us up to Canada this summer.

I loved flying the 31. It was my first type and I was so far behind that thing in my training. I went from a Champ driver to a Lear captain in less than 30 days. The airplane flew a lot better than the sim. I’ll admit I saw the red screen once on a high, hot, and heavy session. I’m still thankful for all my taildragger time. I had a good respect for that machine, it was a scooter for sure. 510 let’s go!

Just to play, my wife is a pilot, what is needed in ratings for a SIC to be legal in a 31?

Legal or insured?

Legal?...multi engine, instrument, ground school, three takeoff and landings, engine out work.

Insurable? Depends on the PIC. To get PIC status in the 35A I had to have 50 dual POST type rating. And that’s with an ATP, 1100 jet, 2000 turbine. I think if you said “We wanna do the Mr and Mrs TRW thing and we are both new to the airplane”... Ok well that’s never going to happen.

It would be a tough sell. Probably rightfully so. Big boy airplane

Could she fly right seat with a high time guy and get blessed by insurance? I would think it would be a tough sell both from an insurance perspective and finding a high time PIC to fly with her. A lot of high time guys want nothing to do with a newbie.

Let's continue with the Lear game.

Why are the 31s so cheap? Are the 35s that worse to fly; you could probably steal one of these? Mark, the AP is bad? There's a 31 with fresh engines for $600K. The inspections don't seem terrible according to Spectra's flat rate pricing; no worse than 1-5s on Citations. Are they that big of a step up from flying an old Citation? Lears are arguably the most attractive looking airplane ever made.

At mid weights, 3,900ft strip is doable; appears so?

31’s are range limited.

1200-1400 for the 31? What does a 35 do? Does the 35 have a Sperry 500 AP or what?

Lear 31. 1200

Lear 35A 2052

Jet FC-200 AP. The guy that I would fly with says AP is worthless for anything other than cruise. Hand fly all departures and arrivals.

No alt preselect.

Old Learjet pilots joke that they usually just declare a fuel emergency after V1.

Tom or another Ins guy jump on. What would be minimum for SIC. Thanks Mark for the info.

Our 31 has the 4650lbs fuel. It’s as long as any leg I care to make.
I Did Albany, Seattle- San Diego in an afternoon.

The standard fuel 31 didn’t seem that range limited. But I like to land so it’s fine by me.

SIC: with the right program you can get by with a lower time SIC.
The 31 is really an SP cockpit with 2 people in it.
Great value. Kinda crappy AC. Great panel.
Climbs like a mofo. Often 3000+ ft/min climb in the mid 30s. It’s nuts.
