Learned two new things about flying 501s:

1) If you get a smoke in the cabin situation, 99% of the time it's the overhead fan (shut it off).

2) If the rain door buzzes, cut bleed on low to suck it down until fixed.

The fan motor itself is smoking or it's pulling smoke from another source?

Six degrees of separation baby. Small world. Especially in aviation. Do you know Jose Perez? He called me looking for a PIC for the 501P. He manages the 560 I have flown on Rocker trips. I couldn’t because I was contract flying another 560 (N561PA) for a family out of Miami. That contact came from the fact that the aircraft manager for 561PA and I both had same Citation Simcom instructor. I connected Jesse and Jose.

And for those wondering how to get contract work on the side...that’s how it happens. You get known in a network. Help a guy in a pinch and word gets around. I know a guy who knows a guy.

Fascinating. I am looking to contract fly on the side, but wondering how insurance/pilot qualifications work?

My 501 insurance requires 4000 PIC, 2000 multi, 500 jet and 100 make and model for it to be flown under the "open pilot warranty".. thus, it is actually not easy for me to hire a contract pilot (if I ever wanted) because its hard to find pilots with availability at short notice that have 100 hours of 501 time. Also, its going to take me a lifetime to get to 4000 PIC, 2000 multi so I have always thought "contract flying on the side" as an unachievable dream.

If the owner or operator uses it too then APG will link it you your account for free. Huge help. I did it manually. Total PITA. 3) make sure all the paper work is on board. 4) talk to pilot who last flew it. Get the “skinny”. 5) get fuel programs and credit cards for fuel and fees. 6) I fly with a Satphone. I was able to text operator with questions in route. 7) get there early, put it on a GPU and get used to panel/FMS.

Not for the faint of heart. That said, they are wonder airplanes that have a high dispatch reliability.

Also if you are flying in and airlining back that takes planning. Weather was horrific in KPUB on Sunday. So we pushed to Monday. $400 in change fees. Barely made my flight out of KDRO to KPHX. If I missed 1) another change fee 2) hotel 3) owner pays another day rate.

That's helpful Mark.. I agree not for the faint of heart. Airlining to contracts with the tight margin must be stressful. It seems like any time I airline these days, if I am unlucky to not have a direct flight, its always hours of delays and cancellations going through hubs.

You are now an "open pilot" for the 500 series, but there must have been a time when you had 0 501 specific time? I couldnt get my insurance company to add a pilot to my policy who met all other requirements and hundreds of hours in a 551, but had 0 501 time.

Be on the look out for Red Bo at KMDW.
We are regular visitors there since our middle daughter moved to Chicago and that’s our preferred field and FBO. Their van drops us off at the L station and 15 minutes later we are down town. Usually weekends.
