The engines are fully electronically controlled. However they're single channel ecu's so not considered FADEC. If the ecu fails it reverts back to manual mode.

And yes, on landing the idle thrust is reduced after 2 seconds.

Hi Everyone,

Ok, now that my MEL is done, I am seriously heading down the 501SP path.

A couple questions....

1) I understand there are services to track the maintenance. But for a single owner-operator, couldn't this just be done in a spreadsheet? If so, has anyone created one that they could share? It should be straightforward to list all the phases and then have formulas to calculate next due, etc.

2) I need a mentor pilot in the Tulsa, OK area. This is the final piece of the puzzle for me. I have joined CJP and posted there but wanted to ask here as well.

You're not going to track it in a spreadsheet. It's way beyond that, and you would have no easy way of knowing new items that need to be tracked. You can do anything, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Get SierraTrax. It's easy, very robust, and does the work for you. Both of my Mustangs have been on SierraTrax. It works really well and is way less expensive than other options.

In theory, yes.

The fundamental inputs are current date, airframe hours, airframe landings, engine #1 hours and cycles, engine #2 hours and cycles, and vapor cycle air conditioner hours. Items come due based on hours, cycles, or time. Seems simple enough on the surface.

In practice, it is a daunting task. My status report has 1020 items. Tracks inspections, parts, ADs, SBs, etc. Practically any part with a serial number is in the list, though not all.

Some parts have hours/cycles/time that aren't zero at install. So they need offsets.

One issue is that shops are used to using the services and not your spreadsheet, so you will be entering all the MTRs (maintenance transaction records, basically log book entries) yourself. With a service, the shop usually gets a means to directly enter the maintenance through the service.

An issue would be if you get off the services and go spreadsheet, and then you want to get back on a service, that may be a problem since they won't know how to import from your home grown spreadsheet.

I have Sierratrax, $1200/year. The other service is CAMP/CESCOM which is $6000/year. Most owner operators are using SierraTrax for obvious reasons.

Part of the value of using a service is establishing confidence for your buyer when you go to sell. Handing them a home grown spreadsheet won't do that. So part of the deal is a kind of validation things are being tracked correctly.

Chris: Do you know who you'll use for maintenance? See if they can do this for you. My shop took care off all that and had the information in ready form when we sold our plane. Some shop owners/managers can be mentor pilots or are in touch with those that can and may give you insight into them. A second good place is who you use for initial/recurrent training. Those places may have good contacts. I used Rich Aviation in Fort Worth. Shawn Rich knew a lot of good folks in that area.

Thanks for the info. I am assuming I can use Intercontinental Jet at TUL but I haven't talked to them yet. They are mostly known as a Garrett/MU-2 shop but they are a Piaggio Service Center as well which are Pratt's. They list Citations and JT15s as part of their services on their website, but I need to call Mark and get the warm fuzzies.....

I have been talking to the folks at Florida Jet Center for my initial. I was planning to have them come to me. But I will check out the folks at Rich Aviation too.

On the maintenance front, I didn't think about the resale and shop management aspect of it (Thanks as always Mike C!). It hit home yesterday when, for one of the aircraft I am looking at, the owner was able to email me the maintenance status in a few minutes. I see the convenience of that now. SierraTrax it is!
