No way an Insurance company will allow a guy with no 501 time to fly PIC in a 501. regardless of FAA rules.
I tried to get a 550 guy into my 501 and the insurance basically treated him the same as someone with no CE-500 type. He had to go thru school again for 501. Which is ironic as there is no 501 school. The Underwriters are losing their minds. They are clueless and just making up silly rules because they do not understand the 501 compared to other CE-500 aircraft. They made him go through a CE-500 initial again? That is broken. I can see a differences course. New limitations, different memory items, different systems, etc. I believe that there is not a single 501 sim in the USA. Do the insurance people know this? I did my initial in-airplane but plan to do my recurrent in sim so I can practice things that are unsafe. But IIRC on this thread the only sims available are 550 sims.

No. You’d be flying as a crew in that case anyway since both of you are typed. The FAA sees no distinction between a straight 500 and an Ultra (for example) which is a bit nuts, but that’s the rules. Ian, if you’re buying the jet, I’d humbly suggest that you do your type in the jet so you don’t have any SOE required, then immediately go and do a “recurrent” at a sim school. If you have any pressurized twin experience, the 500 series is simple to fly. As others have mentioned, insurance will be the driver not the FAA in any case. Robert

Robert Robert, ideally I would do the rating in the actual plane, but as I'm currently working in the Middle East I'm only able to fly when I'm in the US in the summer. So if I buy a plane now it will just sit around most of the year. Therefore plan is to finish up the MEL, do the type rating in the sim, and lease/rent a 501/500/550 or whatever is available to do the SOE. Then maybe buy a 501 if I retire and move back to the US. Being able to do the SOE in any 500-series plane is helpful as a 501 per se may not be easily available for rent or lease. 550's seem much more common. Plus more room to take family and baggage along with the mentoring pilot occupying the right seat. Differing avionics packages among the planes could be an issue, though. I figure I'm in for 25 hours SOE no matter how I slice it as I'm coming directly from a SEP and definitely need the mentoring.

Ugh. Based on the height of the grass that wasn't very long in between photos.

Considering the genesis of this thread, there is another Klingon Bird of Prey that shares a hangar with me. Attachment: PXL_20220211_180450435.jpg

Hey, is that an OEM T&B on the panel? I always get confused between T&B and TC. I thought the TC has a canted gyro (so it can sense both turn and bank) but the T&B doesn't.
So if you turn off the YD and bank your plane but hold the same heading (e.g. a slip), the T&B should show no needle deflection but the TC will. But then why do they call it a T AND B?
Also I was trying to look up the LD ratio of the 501. I figure it must be at least 12:1?
