Also, can't do this in a 525:

You can't do it in most legacy types, either.

I think only 500 and 501 can do it "normally". Others require "gravel kit" for turf operations.

If you are serious about this, go get your multi (I did do that in 2 days at ATP, easiest rating to get ever), study Citation systems, and go do a type rating sim class somewhere as a single pilot for a 501SP. I'd recommend Simcom since they tend to be more owner operator oriented than Flightsafety. I chose Flightsafety because I had been to Simcom so much for the MU2 (the have the only MU2 sims) and I wanted a change, and I wanted the "pro" experience that they provide supposedly, and, oddly enough, Flightsafety was slightly cheaper than Simcom.

I appreciate your insights as always. I am signed up to get my multi w/ ATP the second week of June. Studying the Seminole Training Supplement as I type. How long has it been since I used Carb Heat? And my total complex time is about 2 hours in a 182RG when I was a teenager to get my complex endorsement. Looking forward to it!

Why are you not considering the 525's. They are single pilot.

Cost more to get, especially for longer range ones.

Have to pay money to the Williams mafia.

Can cost more to maintain, oddly enough, due to lack of used parts, tend to be on expensive programs, have more intense inspection requirements, and tend to be serviced more at factory service centers. More choices for the legacy series.

If the cost of entry is tolerable, they are an option.

They do have a CE-525 (crew) and CE-525S (single pilot) type rating distinction.

Mike C.

Yes but why get the crew? Get the 525S. Or any S. Same amount of time.
If you have that much time it must have been super easy for you with all of your experience.

How about getting your multi in a DA 42? No carb heat or prop control. More similar to what you are in now than a Seminole.

Find him a place that does that.

The ATP program is very direct and structured, will get it done fairly quickly.

If he can't handle carb heat and a prop control, then a jet is not indicated. Those are just checklist items to be done and the jet has plenty of those.

I didn't think about it that far. My plan has always been to go turbine so didn't care to take my time and really learn piston multi. I just found a nearby place to grind it out and they use Seminoles. At this point I've already put down the deposit, so carb heat it is!

Why did you take your type rating ride as a crew?

Insurance requires sim initial at Simcom or Flightsafety. This seemed to be the rule for any zero jet time guy regardless of other experience.

Neither Simcom nor Flightsafety offers a CE-500 initial course with embedded SPE.

Best they can do is CE-500 crew initial, then an entire SPE recurrent separately afterward.

Since I need 50+ hours mentoring, I chose to do CE-500 crew initial now. I thought it best to start with mostly crew ops and then gradually become more single pilot as the time progresses. Once I have fully transitioned to single pilot ops with a mentor, then I will be ready for the SPE course. This way I maximize my training value since the SPE recurrent resets my 61.58 clock instead of that already counting down.

Further, the SPE requires 3 takeoffs and landing in the actual airplane, which I wouldn't have at the initial, so I didn't meet the eligibility requirements for the SPE course.

CE-525S doesn't help me fly a Citation V. That works only on 525 series.

There is no CE-500S. I wish there was.

You can get a CE-500 type in a 501SP course, which you can do single pilot. Doesn't help fly a 560 since you still need to do SPE.

I'll do CE-500 crew initial, fly with mentor as I gradually do all the work, then SPE, then all set. Not a big deal.

A DA 42 is more jet-like, therefore less to unlearn when transitioning to jets. At any rate, sounds like it's not an option for him at this point.

I just got my CE-500 type rating at Flightsafety Atlanta, entirely in sim, with checkride, and I have 0 jet time. The FAA says I can now be PIC in a Citation. I don't need SOE because I have lots of turbine time in the MU2. But my type says "SIC required" because I did the initial and checkride crew.

That's weird, I had 1000 turbine and 20 dual received in jets and they gave me the SOE limitation. I think even the examiners aren't really clear on how it's supposed to work.

The rule:

https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/61.64

It is hard to parse through all the requirements.

The turbojet are section (b). Just having 1000 turbine doesn't do it.

(b)(1) says you qualify if you have another type rating, as long as it isn't also SOE required.

(b)(2) says 1000 hours in two different jets.

(b)(3) says you have PIC military background in jets.

(b)(4) says you have 500 hours in the same type of jet.

(b)(5) says you have 2000 total, 500 turbine.

I qualify under (b)(5), 2000 total, 500 turbine.

If you don't qualify, then you need the 25 hours SOE in section (g).

For a new jet pilot, even one who qualifies for no SOE, the insurance will require at least that much, so it really isn't a material issue, doesn't change anything in actual fact.

Ah, that's why.. needs to be multi-engine. "Have logged at least 2,000 hours of flight time, of which 500 hours were in turbine-powered airplanes of the same class of airplane for which the type rating is sought."

I only had 100 KingAir and the rest PC12...

I sold my V in this frothy market and went back to a super low time 501. Installing twin 750s, garmin radar and a new interior. We are doing the work in house.

Nice!

How easy is it to do an aft bag potty with a privacy curtain and still put at least six seats in the passenger cabin (8 seats total including crew)? I'd be ok with dumping the refreshment center.

It is easy, buy a plane already setup that way, such as a 550, 551, S550, or 560.

The spar runs under the read bench seat in a 501, so there's place to stick the toilet under you. The rear bench seat is also 3 passengers of capacity, so not easy to replace in the rest of the cabin.

If you want private facilities, and comfortably hold 8 people beyond that, you need a bigger cabin.
