Hi All,
I'm looking at a Piper Cub with the following specs.
1946 Piper J3C, TT4100
C90-12 with SkyTec STC starter. Approx. 400 since restoration and major OH Sealed struts Rear int. reel shoulder harness Wing tank Metal spars Metal prop Wheel pants
The C90-12 seems like a good upgrade, as do the starter, wing tanks, metal spars., sealed struts and shoulder harness. I'm wondering, though, what the useful load would be?
Any comments on this particular Cub?

depends on the empty wt, all the mods are good, c90 is a great engine on the j-3, not sure why you would want wheel pants though

Also check who did engine and make sure logs are complete. Price? I've had mine 20 years or so and love it. J-3 cub club is a good source also.

It's going to be stuck with the metal spars, unfortunately. But the wheel pants, metal prop, and starter you can easily throw in the trash and get it back to closer to the ideal.

Mine has the c85 stroker and no starter, which I prefer. Wood spars, 24x11x4 tires, vg's and a seaplane prop. outperforms most supercubs if I'm in it by myself

Hi All,
Currently, the wheel pants aren't installed and I would leave it that way! Not sure on the generator or alternator, but I'll find out.
Asking price is $43K.

Sorry to hijack. I need a right wing (wood spar) for my '46 J3. If anyone happens across one, please let me know.

John,
What is the empty weight? Have the modifications turned a lightweight aircraft into a pig? I would fly and see how it feels. You may be better looking at a PA-11 or PA-18-105 special. Go to Supercub.org and search around on threads there.

Ed My experience with the Cub would not support Ed's position. The only "pig" Cub is the stock 65 horsepower model which is grossly underpowered. My J-3, modified to a PA-11 configuration with a 100 HP O-200 is at least 120 pounds heavier than stock. So, if I have a 15 or even 20% increase in empty weight, I have a 50% increase in horsepower. With the 85 hp model you are considering, you have a 28% increase in horsepower. The minimal weight increases of the modifications you list will still allow for a substantial increase in the power to weight ratio. The wing area of the J-3 is the same as a 1800# Super Cub. Not so the vertical stabilizer which is 18" longer on each side than the J-3 stabilizer. Jg

my opinion - I added a caveat Quote: A hand prop 65 j3 is the best combo for light and fun flying out there....ASSUMING AN AERONCA CHAMP IS NOT AVAILABLE By the time I get myself into the seat of a J3 I'm too aggravated to enjoy the flight. With a champ, just step in like a civilized person.
