The Mako was introduced at Oshkosh this year ("like the Lancair ES only faster" -- 200 kts cruise), and Lancair is promising more excitement at Oshkosh 2018. Good for them!

They say the retractable nosegear option is worth 12 knots.

I agree it looks goofy but then again I always thought the nose strut on the Columbia/Cessna 400 looked goofy.

Your right. It's everybody else who watches the aircraft in flight who pay the price :D

If I had a fixed-gear plane that would gain 12 knots with a retractable nosegear, I'd sure have one.

And, looking like a taildragger in flight makes it look VERY cool....

Maybe they should've just made it a taildragger. Same effect much simpler.

it also creates a hump between the pax/pilot where the nose gear is stowed, i'd rather take the interior space and simplified design of a fixed gear, i'm also very skeptical of their numbers being accurate

How much is it worth in insurance premiums?

This (valid) argument always comes up for retracts. Is it possible to get an insurance policy that does not cover gear-up landings, but still covers the other usual stuff, in order to decrease the premiums?

What if it’s not pilot error? What if you have a forced off field landing and wanted to stretch the glide?

Same here - RV 7/8/9 (tailwheel) vs 7a/8a/9a (tricycle) are 2 mph difference.

The short answer is - no
