Thus the up and coming B-797, a 757 replacement.

In the 2003-2005 time frame Boeing was begging Continental ALs to order some/any 757s so they could justify keeping the line going. Maybe a little known or well known fact, but CAL w/Gordon Bethune(a former Boeing Exec.) was sort of a Boeing dumping ground for airframes whose ALs had cancelled their order or gone out of business in the late 90s and early 2000s/post 9-11-01. We received 76-200s, 76-400s, and 75-300s that were not owned or leased coming off the line(white tails, in Boeing speak). Great planes all, ok the ops cost of the 76-200 were a bit off the chart, but it was a total rocket ship to fly.

Anyway, as the story is told, Boeing marketing did such a good job of "selling" the 73-800 & 73-900 as a much less expensive 757 replacement that we didn't order any Boeing shut down the 757 lines.

So....now we started to try, emphasis on try, to fly the 757 trips with the 73-8s & 9s.

Yea, that didn't work out so well.

Example, IAH-ANC,;

the 757 procedure, load up the plane with pax, cargo and fuel, don't worry about weight, cg, or headwinds, it will make it.

the 737 procedure, block 20-30 seats, pick an airframe that is low drag/consistently shows flight plan or less fuel burn, fuel the plane in the AM while the wing and fuel in the truck is still relatively cool so you can pack more on, flight plan below FL360 as the 737 FMC didn't work well above the tropopause at the time, have BOI, SEA, and YVR as possible bailout/refuel points if things are not working out as planned, realize that at some point, usually just before/after YAK VOR (Yakutat) that you are going to end up landing at ANC or Elmendorf AFB anyway b/c you didn't have enough and couldn't carry enough fuel to go anywhere else. Coming back was just about the same goat rope (only had to block 15-20 seats, usually) but you had many more bail out points if things were not going to plan.

Since 2004-05 we, the pilots, have been hearing that 737 service to near Europe (England, Scotland, Ireland) will be starting "soon"...........still waiting. They have done numerous proving flights over the years with the different new models of 737 and still don't have the confidence or the economic viability to make the route work. As of a few years ago the rumor of Iceland as a destination for the 737 keeps getting floated around.....we'll see.

Bottom line, "Fellow pilots, I have flow the 757 as CA and FO. I know 757s. 757s are a beloved friend of mine. 737, you're no 757." With apologies to Lloyd Bentsen.

Never flew the 737 but I’ve flown the 757 and it is nice but it’s old.

I guess if you were to compare it, the 757 is preferred by pilots, both are narrow in the cabin and the 738/9 had way more demand (NG alone had 5x as many orders and add the Max its 10x. Only 1050 made)

I prefer flying the 321. It’s new. It’s even nicer to land and that’s saying something because the 757 was fantastic. But it’s more modern. Wider. Yuge cockpit. Auto trim, auto bank hold, etc. The neos will be even more sweet.

757!! Someone earlier said it best. Big engines. Big brakes. It can go anywhere (that airliners go). John Wayne for instance. Real men know how to trim airplanes and can hold bank angles.

I'm glad the 757 is fun to fly but as a passenger it is absolutely the worst in its class.....at least the Delta version. I absolutely hate flying in a 757 as a passenger, even in economy comfort. I'd rather fly coast to coast in a stretch 737.

Hey now, I fly the miniBus into John Wayne. And then I stare at all the GA stuff as we taxi back and occasionally go... "they talk about those on beechtalk... they say they suck" :D

But trim wheels... that's just so... 70s... and labor intensive

Now just imagine if the 757s timing had allowed it to reap the benefits of these geared engines and maybe some composite rework and lightening of the frame?

Or maybe it was just too much plane, i don't know, but the 739 sitting over there with a pole holding the tail up at the gate says that was too much of a stretch.

I wonder where Boeing would be today if they had sold the 757 instead of a cheaper 737 stretch... surely they could have convinced Southwest to transition into the 757, it seems that in the last 20 years SWA has figured out how to sell every seat. With that in mind I would think that the 757 starts making more sense.

I really don't know enough, but what is apparent is that if Boeing has anymore issues with MCAS they may be wishing it was the 737 manufacturing plant that was replaced with a Target and a Dick's Sporting Goods.

I have to say the 757 is my all time favorite flying airplane! For me, it even beats the 787. Nice flying airplane and as some said earlier, big engines and brakes! Looks great as well! The 737 is nice but doesn't compare to the 757 in my opinion! I'll always miss that airplane!

I have flown Hartford Brussels on Northwest's 757s a few times. As a pax in cattle class, those trips were horrendous. Single aisle, service never got to the back, 1 lav for 200 pax and Northwests notoriously grumpy cabin crews.

All of our (Delta) 757-300's were from NWA. That is a whole different airplane. It performs like a pig, super easy to scrape the tail and it takes F O R E V E R to offload. I would hate riding in the back of one of those.

Is the 757 the one with TV monitors hanging from the ceiling in the aisle? I'm 6'4" and nearly knocked myself out hitting one of those once.

757 = Elegant (jet age successor to the Connie in that regard)
737 = Runt of the overacheiving draught horse litter

I used to ride out of John Wayne on the 757 with noise abatement in full force. I would sit there thinking, compressor stall, compressor stall, compressor stall. LOL Never happened of course and we always got a little of the weightless feeling at the first level off. I had almost 1.5 million FF miles on Delta alone so, praise God, my wide butt never flew in the back that I can recall. The 757 is aeronautical art.

What was the cause for the heightened concern for compressor stall?

I know off topic, but i always thought the L1011 was a great plane. When compared to the problems the DC 10 had and to a lesser extent the 747,it was about as safe as u can get. relatively few accidents and most pilot induced. I think one had same uncontained tail engine failure as souix city crash that took out three of four hydraulic systems. Flew it a many times as a passenger on military contract flights PHX -aviano-sigonella back in the eighties. Don’t know why it wasn’t more popular. Anybody have any experience with them?
