How old is the airplane? Textron should step up to the plate and help figure it out. If not, check with FAA for some assistance. That is a serious QA problem in manufacturing.

Is the installed engine serial number similar to the logbooks like two digits swapped or a few numbers off or is it completely different?
I like the idea of a logbook entry. Are you sure that it is the engine that the plane left the factory with? (Note I am not an A&P so I am not truly knowledgeable about this.)
Is the engine the correct model number?
How many owners has the plane had? How many previous owners do you know?
I would call AOPA for guidance after you have assembled the above data.

This guy bought it brand new from Cessna. Just wrong serial number. It does not match the one in the plane. So now the plane is grounded.

He has the history of the engine since new since you said he was the original owner. Worst case scenario, even for temporary purposes, copy the old logbook pages, start a new logbook, show compliance with any AD's, and go fly. That should take a competent A&P or IA about an hour while Textron steps up to the plate and explains how it occurred... In the end, there will probably only be a entry showing the corrected serial number with an simple explanation and he's good to go.. It's going to be much easier since he's owned the airplane since new. ...or figure out who stole his engine... Jason

I must have missed the memo on Beechtalk's "post a photo with no clear message" day. Maybe she is reporting a red circle outside her window and is afraid an airplane will now fly through it? ( viewtopic.php?f=41&t=145208 for "context") Mike C.

At some point a fellow Noir fan will be along to explain it to you.
