It conforms to its type design (it's the right engine model), its service, maintenance, and inspection history are known and presumably not an issue, so why isn't the aircraft airworthy?

This, with an exception; AD Compliance disposition. It is possible the installed engine serial number could be effected, whereas the serial number in the logs is not. There are a few AD's on these engines (the Cessna 172 re-start planes). Roller rocker AD comes to mind. Still, this should be a few hours (or less) of the IA documenting installed engine and accessories, and generating a fresh AD Compliance Report.

I would contact the factory and ask them to check on the source of the engine with the serial number that is actually installed. My guess is that is an easier way to determine the problem.

Search the FAA web page with the in hand engine serial number and see if it is assigned to an aircraft then contact Cessna and ask the how they are going to solve this?
