I think this airplane is cool but there's no way it's getting sold for anything less than $300-400K by the time it's flying. The link above indicates a Velocity is about $300K. I don't think there are enough savings in alternative engines to shave hundreds of thousands off the price. I also don't think it's going to be any cheaper than building a Velocity.

I thought with the Thielert they took an off the production line engine, changed the valve cover and oil pan sump to allow for the inclined angle of install, changed the alternator and used a FADEC designed for the airplane and then charged more for the engine than the entire vehicle it come in.

There was an article on diamond aircraft that showed a room full of these engines and explained the process.

Didn’t know that someone was making a custom crank and rods for these little engines.

I should have said "short block". Thielert did replace the block, with aluminum vs. the original iron, but Austro keeps the short block. Here's a video listing some of the changes:

I'm thinking along the same lines. I think $400k is much more likely the cost. Even at that it's an amazing plane for traveling at that price. Sure, it's 3x what they are targeting.

Set up a partnership/joint ownership. Not always easy, but doable. Split the cost two or three ways. Brings down not only the capital to buy the plane, but also the annual fixed costs with plane ownership.

I've flown in 3 and 4 pilot partnerships and the plane is typically very available. Even when we've had 3 people each flying 80-90 hrs/year. It's a traveling plane, so it's not like the rental 172s going out for an hour or so for a $100 hamburger run or an hour to 1.5 hours for a training flight. When someone has it they knock out 5 -10 hours on one trip.

The wife and I almost put a down payment on one but after reading and listing to the cost slowly start creeping up just turns me away. The whole PURPOSE of this plane and company was to make an aircraft that was amazing and change the price of owning a plane. Affordability for anyone to own and fly. Now, I am noticing that its slowing creeping up up up and away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very sad and as usual here comes the price hikes! Like they always say, it was a great idea and like someone said in an earlier post. They are finding out that they can't make any money on selling them. And that's the clincher..................... You build it for $100,000 and sell it for 1.2 million and that's the American way. I am still interested in it...lol

There is very little risk in putting a deposit down now since it is in escrow and fully refundable (minus a small fee).

I don't think these guys are putting it to anyone. I really think when they started they thought they could build it for 130k. the idea being if we have 1,000 + on order we can negotiate for lower prices on all the parts, avionics etc. But they have run into lots of issues, had to change things, and they have added things. So its taking longer and costing more then they thought. I hope they can pull this off I really do but I have a bad feeling about it. I think the plane will under preform in the end. That will give many an excuse to back out. Then when the final price tag is calculated north of 225-250k it will knock out many more. Again I don't think these guys are trying to gouge anyone, but building flying machines is not a cheap endeavor. Especially when you are talking about a plane like this one, pressurization, speed, seats, chute, glass, A/C etc.

Vern Raburn, founder of Eclipse, thought the same thing. Later he expressed his frustration that he'd be talking to suppliers about huge multiples of their annual sales and they'd grudgingly allow a discount of maybe 2%.

They may have thought this, but it seems misguided based on the prices Cessna and Cirrus charge to sell a large number of planes. I doubt they're just bringing in all margin with those prices.
