Hi again Folks,

Does anyone have the flint aero tanks on their 206h? Over here, av gas fuel is very hard to come by. I'm really thinking on adding the tip tanks. I would greatly appreciate your pros and cons on them. Thanks.

I flew a 1980 with flint tip tanks. If I remember correctly, they added 30 gallons. Worked great. The only negative is that they may not fit in every hangar with the extra wingspan.

Thanks Edward. Yup the tip tanks add another 36 inches to the total wing. But did it degrade performance like cruise speed?

I had one aircraft with tips and one without.

Using them is very easy. You burn enough fuel in the main tanks and then just transfer in the fuel from the tips using an electric pump in flight. The range is very nice and gets you about 900 Nautical miles total vs. ~600 with only the factory tanks.

It doesn't really slow the aircraft down in cruise and there is a slight benefit for high altitude operations.

In addition to the fuel the other reason owners put them on is to increase the gross weight another 200 lbs. to 3,800. The additional weight does NOT have to be fuel so you can take less fuel and more cargo if you want.

The negatives are the increased wingspan as mentioned and when landing the aircraft doesn't feel as stable when landing or low speed operations. The last point is not a big deal just a small difference in the way the aircraft handles that an experienced owner would notice.

I was only flying the 206 with tip tanks, so I couldn't compare with stock. It has been several years, but I think made book performance, or really close.

I remember it being a very nice flying airplane.

Adding Flint tip tanks to my 99 T206H made the airplane feel better on landing. I had VG's, before adding the tip tanks, and added some to the tips also.

I see no downside, if you have a big enough hanger.

Thanks Alex. Is it only flint aero that makes tip tanks? I was thinking the opposite while landing . I thought that because of the increased wing surface, the plane would have a better glide? No?

Thanks Kelvin, did the VG's hamper speed?

The 206 already has a high lift wing (I cross the fence at 65 knots even heavy), so the tips give you even more lift with the additional ~3.5'. The trade-off for that lift is you are also reducing your wing loading, which makes a subtle difference when you are light weight especially on a gusty or crosswind day. Is it a big deal? No, but it's something I have noticed as have several others when they installed the tips that why I mentioned it. Consider it just a minor observation, get the tips if you need the fuel (sounds like you do) and you have a hangar big enough.

Yup, I do need the fuel Alex. Flint is out of them for now. He says maybe another month or so. They are the only ones who manufacture tip tanks for the 206 right?

Flint is the only one. They also have a modification to allow the fuel totalizer on the G1000 to reflect the higher fuel capacity, but it is pretty expensive. So I just usually add the fuel manually in the totalizer.

Ok Alex, noted. Thanks

I installed them on my TU206F. They increase aspect ratio so at high altitudes you'll get a slight speed increase. I usually keep 7gals in each tip and use it when a flight doesn't go as planned(usually due to Wx). It's nice to not have to worry about not having enough fuel when things go unexpected. If you are light, the plane will fly at slower speeds but the rudder, ailerons and elevator are quite effective(there are no Vmc issues). For grins, to simulate a broken transfer pump, I've flown at pattern speed with one tip full and the other side empty and it flys OK(but you do feel the imbalance). If IFR, I always transfer 1/2 from each at a time to avoid potential full/empty imbalance. It has no effect on my KFC200 autopilot.

Thanks Steve. Why do you say "avoid potential full/empty imbalance" ? Did you mean imbalance from each tank?
