"Aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out capabilities will no longer be required to specifically apply for approval to operate in Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM) airspace, according to a newly proposed FAA regulation."

I have a C425 with a single G600, single AHRS, ADS-B (GTX345), and the original cessna 1000 autopilot. The article says "Under the new rule, aircraft with ADS-B Out will still need to have a suitable autopilot...". Where can you find the definition of a suitable autopilot? Would the new Garmin GFC600 be suitable?

See section 2 in https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/separation_standards/rvsm/documents/AppendixG_to_Part-91.doc

This proposal does not change the RVSM equipment requirements.

Allen,

I couldn't open the attachment, so this will not allow operation without the other RVSM and equipment standards being met?

I had seen this in another thread and assumed it was too good to be true.

Correct. RVSM equipment requirements do not change. Once your aircraft meets RVSM equipment requirements you do not need to get FSDO approval to fly in RVSM airspace if ADSB equipped.

Just like if WAAS GPS equipped and approved by an A&P you do need need FSDO approval to fly RNAV approachs.

Never heard that one. I've installed two WAAS GPS units in two different airplanes and besides a 337 I never had to deal with the FAA.

always had been surprised what kind of "rocket science" the FAA had made out of RVSM…

we have tons of clowns here in Europe within EASA and the European Commission, who would not know the front end from the rear end end of an airplane, but make themselves important with all kinds of useless regulations..

but interestingly enough RVSM certification has always been a non-event in Europe since introduction.....

Meant to say:

Would skin contour mapping still be required if this new rule was enacted?

YES if it's part of the manufacturers (or STC) maintenance program.
This potential change only waives the requirement for a LOA, not for RVSM equipment or maintenance.
